My P2 has a wheel speed dependent bearing noise in the differential, sounds like a loose parts in a roller bearing. I’ve found nothing on rebuild kits nor rebuilding info
I’m in the hunt for a used gearbox as I will probably swap and then work on rebuilding the original
It looks more like the NA eng8ne uses the M56H with 4.25 final drive, turbos use the M56L with 4.0 final drive.
They ar efreely available in EU for $150. - 300
$3600 plus core new here.

You may want to buy a set of used cv axles too for your M56 , those are hard to find in the US.

Mine is making a lot of noise too. Quiets with the clutch in at idle or using 5th gear while moving.
Luckily
my son grenaded his S70, so I pulled the tranny before scrapping. N/A, so probably different gearing.
As a bonus he just replaced the clutch with an 850R clutch, so I get a free clutch and his was one of the last cars with a single mass flywheel.

I recently heard a noticable Knocking noise after a short drive heard at idle (around once every second) i revved the engine and it went away but came back at idle, then pressed and released clutch and it went away and didnt come back. Car has New Volvo DMF clutch/TO bearing. Noise hasnt come back on recent drives. Google search of BMW forums says manual gearboxes can be noisy. Replacement M58 here is impossible.

Things rattle in idle in manual transmissions - esp as they get older and loosen up.
I have changed fluid types and it can change the gear rattle a bit.
Keep an ear out to hear if it gets worse.
