2001 S40 - Problem with power windows getting stuck

Post by nmk »

Hello,

I've searched the forums and didn't find an answer to my question - sorry if it's a repost. It's an S40, about 30K miles.

I have a problem with my driver's side power window: it goes down normally, but is finicky about going back up. *Sometimes* it will go up a few inches when I push the switch, then stop, and require me to pull it up a little bit manually, and then will go up a few more inches when I push the switch again, etc. until finally closed. Other times, it doesn't move at all when I push the switch.

Any idea from this description what may be wrong with it? Is this something I can fix myself (I'm okay with mechanics, but no expert), or does it require a professional? Any "how-to" guides out there with step-by-step instructions and a list of what I will need?

Thanks for helping!

I had the same problem on the rear passenger side door. I finally traced it to a bad switch. You might be able to jumper the switch, if the glass rises with the switch bypassed, then it's the contacts in the switch. If the problem persists, it's time to put the meter to the motor and see if it draws excesive current. Removing the door panel shouldn't proof too difficult, before replacing the motor, I'd measure the current on a functioning unit for comparison. The Haynes manual should show you how to remove the door panel or how to access the window switch. I'm unfamiliar with the S40 model, so I can't give more specific help. I hope this helps.
