Hy Buddies,

Hope you're all fine...

Here's a text from a website in France, talking about a 850. I would have your mind if it could be a good deal :
"Description

For do-it-yourselfers ,the CT was good until 2022 but I put too much oil engine problem now ,it runs
starts but it smells burnt ,otherwise clean inside ,sunroof ,towball ,heated seat ,radio ,2 keys collector color ,wheels alu rims .....donc sold without CT".

Could it be as simple as too much oil out of the top of the engine, that runs to the bottom of the warm engine, and smells burned ? Or do you think this engine is "over" ?

Any advice will be helpful.

If the engine runs then there is a chance it may be salvageable. It all depends if the extra oil damaged the head gasket, piston rings and catalytic converter. It is one of those things you have to decide if it is worth the chance? Is it a turbo? If it is a non-turbo then probably a better chance it may work out ok. As the guy says it runs if it is close enough, go take it for a run and see how it goes.

It may not be able to pass an engine emissions test if there is a lot of oil in the cat and exhaust system. It may just need a good long hard run to burn the excess or a lot of the excess oil out of the engine and exhaust.

I know there are a lot of engine cleaners out there these days that can clean the engines and exhaust system. It is expensive, but there are systems that inject the engine with cleaner while it is running and flush the systems.

The other issue may be oil into the emissions/pcv systems that may need to be cleaned out if it got in there. How much 'too much' oil was in the engine? 1-2 liters may not be too bad, but more?

Maybe, but for my friend, it's an one shot operation, we can't miss our goal on this story, i won't go on on this car? Too risky.

Thanks, anyway for your advice... I will find one good, I'm sure (but 850 in good shape begin to be rare over here...).

Yes, I agree with your thoughts on this. Like you 850's are getting rarer here. Seldom in junkyards around here anymore, but then any P80's are. P2's are now becoming a lot more common there now.

If you were buying the car for a project for yourself, then it may have been worth the risk. But like you say, buying it for someone else who is short of funds, that is a big risk for them.

Good luck with the search. Maybe consider the fist generation V70 or S70 up to 98 as they are similar to the 850.

What is the "collector color" of the car? Laser Blue or Saffron Pearl would have made me restore the car.

The 1999-2000 S/V70 are different from 850 but good for other reasons. Consider them also since they may be more available.
