2006 S40 2.4i “gear selector service required”

I searched the forum and didn’t find any posts with my specific issue. Sporadically I receive the warning message “gear selector service required”. It’s intermittent, goes away usually after turning off the car. I have absolutely no trouble shifting into any gears or shifting manually, so I don’t believe it’s the solenoid issue. The gear selector is illuminated and winter driving works when pressed. I’m at a total loss as to what might be causing the message. Any information or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
