850 GLT fuel pump relay

I'm not getting fuel to the fuel rail. I popped the relay out, removed the cover, put it back in, and turned the key. The relay contacts moved together. My question is, does the relay alter the voltage to the pump? Is it possible for the relay contacts to work but the relay doesn't put out enough voltage to work the pump? If not (ie the relay is good) I need a new pump right?

If the relay pulls the contacts together - and the contacts are good - that should turn on the pump. The only real timing that the relay does is to pre-charge the rail when the key hits position I.

If the relay is bad you can verify that by jumpering the sockets associated with pins 15 and 87 on the relay. They are the two opposite pins that perpendicular to each other. If everything runs good then chances are the relay is bad. If you still have trouble take a ball bat and smack the bottom of the fuel tank and see if it fires up again. Sometimes that will wake the pump up.

Even if that does work, smacking the tank, the pump will fail again in short order.
