Cabin Air Filter Size

Post by Oka »

Need to replace the cabin air filter since I don't know when the previous owner changed it.
VIDA has both sizes, 1" (Pollen Filter) and 1.5" (For vehicles with AQS (Air Quality System).

According to FCPEuro, a car with:
- "MAN" only, would require a 1" cabin air filter.
- "MAN" & "AUT" would require a 1.5" cabin air filter.

My 2005 XC90 only has the "MAN" but with a 1.5" filter

However, the one I removed from the car seems to be 1.5"

What size should I install?
Thanks

Stores have two different sizes for this car and hopefully the previous owner has the correct size.
I just put back in a new 1.5" one, charcoal, just like the one I removed.

See this is solved, cool. Just to note though, either filter (with or without charcoal) can fit in an XC90 filter box.

Next time you're doing a cabin filter, shine a mirror up into the filter box. If you don't have IAQS you'll see one or two plastic crossbars blocking the 1.5 inch side. They come right off with a sharp blade or a pair of sharp flush cutters and you can fit the charcoal filter easily in a non- IAQS vehicle.

Read about this many years ago and ran the thicker filter on my 5-seat '05 before I sold it, worked great and kept the vehicle smelling nice. The only rule you have to follow is just one filter at a time in the box.

My V8s have IAQS by default so the 1.5 inch crossbar was already removed. I'll see if the bars exist on the thinner side of the box the next time I'm doing a cabin filter.

edit- fix typo.

I checked today as I realized that my Sport needed an oil change plus a new cabin filter. This vehicle takes the 1.5 inch charcoal impregnated filter. There are no bars on the 1 inch side.

You will lose some AC performance with the 1.5 inch filter, as Jim warned me years ago. You can get some back by going into VIDA and telling it you are using the IAQ one. I live in mild climates so I never noticed the loss, and I hate hot weather.
