‘06 V70R Front Driver side CV axle

Post by E Showell »

Had a torn boot, now repacked and rebooted. Clicking suggests it happened too late. I am thinking it’s time for a new axle. OEM from FCP>$500; TrakMotive “premium” from Rockauto $112 with lifetime warranty. Anybody use the TrakMotive? I could use the savings if it is a quality part.

Consider having your original axle rebuilt (re-machined) by someone like Axles Unlimited. It would cost you about the same as buying one of the Chinese units from the auto parts store and you would retain your OE axle.

Double check those motor mounts especially the front engine mount, right side of car.

I haven’t done CV’s on my V70R, but I have done them a few times on our XC70’s. I always go with GKN Lobro. They manufacture the CV axles for Volvo & are typically 2/3’s the cost of a new Volvo CV axle. Lots of horror stories of ridiculously short life spans with non-genuine CV axles.

- Click could be just longitudinal movement and not necessarily wear on the balls.

- I had the clicking along the longitudinal (trun the wheel outward, grab the axle and slide it toward engine then toward wheel, if you hear the click, then thicker grease is the solution. I use Lucas HD Wheel Bearing Grease and the clicking stops...
