Central Locking/Alarm VGLA Module Compatibility

Post by Cosmic »

My 1998 V70R came with only 1 key and no remotes. I know they keys need to be from Volvo, but wondering about the central locking/alarm remote side of things.

The VGLA module installed in my car is a DENSO unit, Volvo Part 9459266, MB232300-8230. I have found a used unit from a V70/S70/C70 Phase 1 with 2 working remotes, but the part numbers differ. The used item is also DENSO, Volvo Part 9427463, MB232300-8370.

Anybody know if I can simply remove the VGLA from my ca and fit the used item? I figure that since the used item already has remotes programmed to it then it should be plug and play? Working on the theory that the remote unit mounted under the dash top is no more than an antenna and does not need any programming..

TIA

I'm not sure what the system in your car is as different years/markets have different systems.

For example in model year 99 (August 98-) in North America is when our alarm systems started to use chipped keys. Prior to that the keys were relatively cheap from Volvo even when cut. Over here good locksmiths can cut Volvo keys and some can program those that need it.

I know in Europe some markets got chipped keys earlier than over here.

If your keys are not shipped then purchasing a new key is the way to go. Again with the remotes they may be able to be reprogrammed either by yourself or the dealer.

Hopefully someone will join in that knows the European systems better.

Appreciate the reply Neil. Mines an early '98 and has chipped keys which is a PITA but only because I have just the 1 key!

Just to close out, I bought the part number mentioned in my OP, fitted today and all worked fine, so there does seem to be a degree of flexibility in years. FWIW the unit I bought came from a 2004 C70.

Good to know, I never got the remotes to work on mine. I might try changing the VGLA module if I find one on the cheap

Wow!

This might have just saved me the cost of getting a remote for the Kat!

Looks like I can move the VGLA from Shagg and use her remote!

Abscate, let us know how that goes as this would be great news for owners knowing we can find an alternate way to get the remotes replaced.
