replacement engine for '04 V70 n/a
I've been looking at the '04 V70 non-turbo I have sitting around. I decided it is a pretty attractive car, but it needs an engine. Finding a low mileage engine may be difficult, which years are a direct interchange?

Match up the VVT on your engine ( I think you have intake VVT) on your engine so the ECU won’t look for missing/ extra parts

Not sure what you mean by "match up" Do you mean be sure to get an engine with vvt? Don' they all have it from 2000 on? Maybe I got the year wrong.

He means If the VTTs are different on the donor engine swap then for the ones on the engine you have now. Both B5244S and B5244S2 will be a direct drop in. Just change out the VVT hubs if needed.
B5244S & B5244S2 ( RN Engines ) They are both the same engine. Its things like VVT that make the revision number difference.

1996 –1998 Renault Safrane 2.5 or Safrane 2.4 20V.
B5244S4 & B5244S5 are RNC engines. One will work but you would need to redo some things. Re-plumb the PVC plumbing. Reroute the wiring to the alternator. Use the RNC intake manifold. And some other things.

The 6th and 7th digit in your VIN will cross reference to the engine model that was originally installed in your car. For instance, my 2003 V70’s VIN has a “61” as the 6th and 7th digits, so that tells me I have an engine model B5244S (a 2.4 liter NA).

Some bad news for me. In my search for an engine, I have been assuming VIN 61, as it is not turbo. Actually, looking at the title, I find that it is VIN 64, a California model (no idea how that happened). I think my chances of finding one here on the east coast are slim. I have searched the forum and find what seem to be differing opinions as to whether it is just a matter of sensors. So, I guess my question is, if I am paying for labor, is it practical to convert a "61"

Massachusetts adopted Californian's clean air standards in 2005, effective 2009. Before that, Massachusetts had it own Low Emissions Vehicle standards. Instead of creating another version just for Massachusetts. Volvo used the Californian version for Massachusetts cars.
"U Applicability and Definitions.
(a) Under the authority of 42 U.S.C. 7507 and M.G.L. c. 111, § 142A through § 142M, the Department
hereby adopts the California Low Emission Vehicle program."
There are 14 states that have adopted Californian's clean air standards. That way they can have clean air standards without legislating their states out of the market. The Californian market is big enough the manufactures will make special versions to stay in the Californian market. That may not be the same for a smaller state with a smaller market.
The latest state to adopted Californian's clean air standards is Colorado. Adopted 2018 effective MY 2022.

We have a guy hear in Albany that collects and parts p2s. I can stop by this week and see if he has any engines from rear ends or other totals that might work.
I’ll pm my cell to you, send me your VIN , if you want to pursue this.

Let me see how things go around here after this weekend is over. Freight from Albany is yet another cost. I am beginning to wonder about the practicality of this endeavor (I have just been offered a rather nice 240 wagon).
