Ok you lost me :-)

How do you move the steering wheel back and forth without the car changing direction?

Until you explain the only view i can see is that the car zig zags left and right and that means the distance traveled is greater.
But why be so careful, why not turn the wheel clockwise for 5 seconds and then counter clockwise for 5 seconds, maintining the overall AVERAGE direction but constantly changing the instantaneous direction.
It should be obvious i would think, that if the car goes straight from point A to point B and incurs road friction over 1 mile, and another car goes 1 mile left then turns right and goes 1 mile right and still goes from point A to point B, car #2 incurred a lot more friction and used more gas.
Cars are a little differenct than aircraft of course because they have mechanical losses other than friction but if we ignore the gear/bearing friction then we can just concentrate on the road friction so we can talk about it in roughly the same way.

One of the most important quantities/measurements in the universe is distance.

Hey i hear the Jimmy Webb is doing great. It's progressing faster than i thought.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

I'd say tire flex, scrub angles, drag, heat. This experiment just doesn't work on ice I've found.

Yes, I eat at the card table in the kitchen with the other kids, just like Thanksgiving.
