Being adopted, I did the DNA tests to try and find info about the location of the rock from which I crawled out from under.
23 & Me gave very good results - lots of info, inc basic health issues. Ancestry just wants more $$ for everything they supposedly have access to. I wouldn't bother with them.
Where are you from, guys?

I have recently become interested in learning more about my family history. There is lots of information available on the internet without paying someone. Many do not require registration, but some of the more useful ones require registration. Most of my family groups came to the US from central Europe in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
Family history research is like a three dimensional puzzle with lost pieces.

We are essentially northern European mutts I believe - Irish, Scottish, English, French, German, Dutch....
Where I get my Italian car streak I don't know. Five of my grandmothers brothers were machinists, but for the mines, before automobiles.
My older brother is the keeper of the family history lore. Sometimes an obsession, calling unrelated total strangers in Missouri. The only thing that bugs me is he only focuses on our fathers family name back into the ether, when that is just one thread of many.

I am trying to learn about all of the family linage - paternal and maternal. A rough calculation is there will be 3000 children in 5 generations. Most of my family seemed to stay in a small area for several generations. Many farmers and carpenters. One farm has been in the family for three generations and 120 years. My parents generation are getting thinner and I want to get their memories.

Depending on the situation, that can sometimes be a bit awkward if it's a "let's get it all written down before you go." Y'know? So it has to be comfortable, and a conversation. They also may be excited, or pleased that someone is finally interested in their story, and might be ok recording it.

Yes, You would need to ease in to the conversation. With my mother it has been easy and she enjoys the conversations. My interest mostly in what people did and where they lived. At one time in rural areas people tended to marry people who lived within a few miles and then lived their entire lives in the same county. There are also historic maps of farm land ownership that makes the relationships related to where people lived.
