What is the function of the Oscillation Damper??

Post by YV1LW »

Listed as p/n 9480153 it looks like a box with a thin steel plate with 6 screws. It appears to be self contained. I don't believe it directly shares any fluids with the angle gear housing.

How does this unit work?

Is it filled with high density fluid(s)?

Does it require any service or periodic maintenance?

Thanks to all you reply.

As far as I know it's just a weighted vibration damper. No maintenance needed.

The answer is in the name. It dampens oscillations. Does this by absorbing some of of the energy of a vibration.
It is a passive device, no maintenance required.

While on the topic of 1998 automatics;
@richhaleparker
I notice you have a '98 C70 listed with the AW50-42. Is that a special version of the 4 speed automatic? While I haven't pulled all the plumbing that would enable seeing the tranny dataplate, my Owner's manual notes that the manual transmission would be a M56H and the automatic would be designated as AW5-42LE.

Do I have my part numbers wrong? There is no AW42?

Clue regarding that box under the car: Have you ever seen the movie "Speed" with Keanu Reeves?

Noting special the AW50-42 was used on a lot of the P80s. See the attached file.

I was known to use that exact phrase on several occasions in a professional capacity at work.
