04 AWD V70, Odd “cycling” squeaking (video attached)

Post by Pound_Cakeee »

I’ve got an 04 AWD V70 that’s making the oddest noise. The noise is coming from the right side and seemingly the engine bay.

The noise initially only so sounded when the car hadn’t been driven in a few hours, and would only start around 30MPH, while under power… stop shortly after or when I took my foot off the gas.

Now it’s starting at much lower speeds and continuing to be audible for a few miles and at higher speeds… to include when my foot is on the gas or coasting.

It’s also important to note that the noise doesn’t appear when the car is parked, and I can’t replicate it when the vehicle isn't moving.

The belts look fine… but I’m open to suggestions.

The frequency of the squeak makes it tough to tell, but the first place I would look is between the driveshaft (the one that goes from the bevel gear to Haldex/the rear diff) and the exhaust. Sometimes the exhaust, when it gets hot, can warp upwards & make contact with the driveshaft resulting in a horrible sounding squeal. Most often this happens when it is rainy or slushy out and one of the exhaust brackets is broken. There is an afterthought bracket available to keep your exhaust “down” & prevents it from rubbing the driveshaft. Look at the front seam on your resonator (the muffler looking thing just after the catalytic converter). If you look just above that seam and can see a line on your driveshaft where there has been made contact, you’ve found your culprit!

Lots of people have complained about this over the years. Just search something like “2004 Volvo XC70 rain squeal”.

Thanks Pete! I appreciate it. It’s a huge pain and has been getting exponentially worse every day.

When I get back to the house I’ll put it up on the jack stands and take a look.
