2006 S60 2.5T rear brake issue

Post by scot850 »

I had a call from a buddy yesterday. Not spoken to him in some time and his son has an 06 S60 2.5T FWD with about 125,000 miles on it. unfortunately I am in the UK just now so can't go look at it and don't know their history with it yet.

Bottom line it had a drivability issue cause by a rear brake problem. Having not had a FWD P2 I have never hear of the issue the repair shop is quoting to fix it.

They said the parking brakes system needs over-hauling and the part I don't get is the back plates need to be ground down and a re-inforcing plate needs to be fitted. They talk of cutting and grinding the rear knuckles and fitting support pieces for the rear brakes.

Is this some known issue on the FWD cars? Never heard of it but I am not as familiar with P2 FWD cars.

Their quote for this repair and replacing the parts was $1500 as part of an overall quote for $5000! (That included PCV overhaul and radiator replacement and coolant flush).

Any help appreciated.

Neil.

The backing plates can corrode but a junkyard part can be fitted and is in good supply. You need the right independent who will use used parts of course.

Thanks abscate. Do you ever sleep?

So do you think the issue may be the backing plate has rusted out? Why do you need to grind the knuckle to fit a strengthening plate?

You are right. There must be 15 or more P2's at out 2 local PnP's in Calgary just now.

I suspect that what is being described here is the consequence of the parking brake shoe shucking the friction material and jamming up, breaking off the metal bit of the rear knuckle that the parking brake shoes sit on. This happened to my 2004 XC70 this summer! I have removed the entire parking brake assembly for now, and when the weather improves I will do this repair too. There is a repair part from Skandix that is available in Europe that involves grinding down the remaining bit that the shoes ride on and steel replacement and two allen head screws instead of bolts. Way cheaper and easier than the knuckle replacement, wish they were available in Canada!

BTW, the quoted cost for that work is insane-- the repair bit is 12 Euros!

Thanks Herb. Just got a reply from my buddy. I am not clear if we are talking one or 2 issues now.

I think issue one may be the brake issue you mention as he did say something about something breaking off in the rear brakes. However he now also mentioned about an aluminum corrosion issue with the front steering knuckles and something about they cut off part of the steering knuckle and replace it with a steel part.

I will look at it next week when I get back and get this clarified. Appreciate the heads up on the parking brake part at Skandix.

Thanks again Herb. I think this could be the issue, but I will have to wait until I get back and look at the car.

Sounds like lower control arms, aluminum on P2s

Sleep? Who can sleep with Volvos to fix?
