Oh, sweet! I had a similar one made for my son as a going away present after we swapped in a manual in his E30 BMW. Like the Porsche 917 shift knob!

The urban legend is that it was very lightweight like everything on the car. The more likely story is that there was nothing to prevent the heat in the chassis from traveling up to the drivers hand, so a mahogany & balsa lightweight knob did the trick.

That reminds me of Richard Petty. A friend told me the heat from the car was so great it burned down his boot heel, and the right heel would be shorter than the left after the his races. If I recall correctly, this was 1970s, and of course stock car racing.

That's good! And I've always loved that the 917 and the GT40 were RHD but had the shifter on the right sill so you could shift like you're supposed to! (sorry Brits...)
