Do the PCV systems on the P2's tend to clog up like the 98 and old P80's? My buddies son's car has been quoted $1500 to service the system including parts. The car has 125,000 miles on it and they knew the previous owner who appeared to have had it serviced. I don't know how well that was done or how frequently.
My only experience with the P2 PCV system was on or 06 XC70. That is original and I had to replace the stupid corrugated plastic pipe from the catch can to the head which crumbled and leaked. Volvo have replaced the part with a solid pipe like it should have been from new!
Thanks,
Neil.

Just did mine, you are getting ripped off at $1500 (even in Canadian $).
I paid $275 US for the kit and rear coolant line from FCPEuro and got busy with other stuff so took to my local independent shop and paid $440 US. Also had them change thermostat, radiator hoses and clean the throttle body while they had the intake off. Doing the glove test how much air is the engine pushing?

Thanks for the info. I know if I did it I could source parts and do it for a lot less myself. Thing is I'd need to check it needs doing in the first place and that it is not just the pipe to the head that has failed. The son says they tried the glove test but with a plastic bag but nothing happened. If the pipe is split then nothing will happen, or perhaps the act of fitting the bag over the oil filler caused it to fail. I'll update tomorrow once I get a look.
Most independents up here don't like or won't take supplied parts. Strangely the dealer does!

You need a relationship with an indie to get s/h/they on board with user parts. If you get them the right part with good fitment they love it as they don’t spend time chasing them. If they don’t fit it’s Hades as then the Bay is tied up.

Yea I got lucky bringing the parts in. I ordered them planning to do myself but as my schedule filled up and I watched numerous videos the $450 seemed a bargain to let someone with expertise do it. I was surprised they said they'd use my parts, said they had used stiff from FCPEuro in past. Only issue they mentioned was the rear coolant line took some convincing to lay where it needed to.
I'd redo the glove test...everything I've read that will indicate how urgent the PCV service is. Can pull the dipstick a bit short term so any pressure has a path to escape.

The P2s do seem to clog less than the P80s. I suspect they are better maintained, synthetic oil was more popular, and the PCV is thermostatted , of course.

Thanks again guys. I hear what you say and this matches what my experience shows that PCV on P2's can be an issue. Problem is that I have no idea of the maintenance history and how well it has been done in terms of oil changes. The previous owner did do a fair amount from the list they sent me but again what parts and quality used is unknown.
They have also been chasing a P0089 (fuel pressure regulation error). This led to various fuel system parts being swapped including I think the fuel pump. Again, parts used are unknown. That is my worry as we all know what that rabbit hole looks like!
Neil.

Went to see the car today. Definitely has a leaking oil filler cap. Head to oil trap hose has been updated to the new/old style of solid rubber and not the corrugated plastic piece of crap they came with.
The independent repair shop seems to be fair and reasonable. They have already gone over and above what most repair shops do by finding the parking brake repair parts from somewhere in Canada.
Anyway, the service advisor found the PCV kit at FCP Euro. Part # 8692211KT.
The price at $400 US without shipping is not bad as most parts are OE Volvo. But if I recall the large pipe ($230) seldom needs changed on these era of cars unless they are rotten. If we get the other kit without that it is only $150 and even there the catch tank usually can be cleaned but appreciate a repair shop may not do that.
Only part of the kit I don't like is the short 90 pipe to the front of the block from the catch tank. The list the Pro-parts item. Now how the part is only $20 v's OE Volvo at $80 baffles me. I don't have a warm and fuzzy feel with Pro-Parts products and the equivalent part made by good old Uro failed on my 98 V70Xc after only 700km and had to redo the whole job. I love do-overs!
If we don't need the complex pipe then I would suggest swapping for the Volvo part.
Thoughts/suggestions appreciated!

If you don't go with the full kit with the complex coolant pipe there is a small diameter hard vacuum hose that may be brittle and easily or already cracked. This hose is part of the complex coolant pipe and you should consider the full kit or get the replacement part, which is the banjo elbow and the small vacuum hose with fittings. This hose has insulation around it so difficult to see within the full complex pipe. When I did the PCV service for my car this hose crumbled into pieces so had to be replaced. Also consider getting the latest banjo bolt if your car doesn't already have it, 31325709, it has the check ball/valve with improved retention design.scot850 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2022, 16:24 This is the full kit:
