The ones you have in there are the newer style replacement bolts. At least on my 94 that weird bolt you have are used instead of these regular bolts and they almost touch the timing velt. My theory is that they were supposed to keep the belt from jumping a tooth. Maybe the later p80s used regular bolts and therefore that weird long bolt was discontinued.

Could that bolt possibly be one of the three special bolt you use to attach the flex plate , then remove to attach the ten “ regular bolts

No - I would have remembered that.
I installed the bolt in the lower of the two holes in that guard, but it ended up about 2mm away from the timing belt. Just seemed weird so I removed it and installed a standard bolt. But if a pic could be posted of it in place, I might go ahead and use it. I just don't quite get the purpose. Seems that if the belt wanted to jump a tooth, it would hit that bolt and score / cut the belt. But like I said, I just don't get it.

I just did my timing belt tonight, and both of the bolts in the lower cover were those weirdo bolts with the long shank. 10mm head, I think. As soon as I removed them, I was reminded of this thread. They even had the bit of red looking compound on the threads.

Unfortunately, I chewed the head up of one of them a little. I didn't have the wrench on it straight, and it kept slipping off. They were harder to get to than I had thought. It's still in decent enough shape to do the job, Though.

Well then I guess I'll pop it in one of the lower holes and call it good.
