Replacement key fob 2002 V70 XC
Replacement key fob 2002 V70 XC
I recently purchased a 2002 V70 XC and it came with only one key and no keyless entry remote fob. In searching for fobs online I see 3 different designs listed that all say they match my year and model. There's a 3 button, 4 button, and 5 button. Is there a way to tell for sure from my VIN or some other indicator which is the correct type for me to order?

You will need to get it re-programmed and if I recall that can only be done if you have the original packaging. I would recommend doing more research or calling a dealer before spending money. Also you need to be able to check the transponder chip is good and not sure if the 2002 has the flip out mechanical key, and if it does you would need to get a new key cut and then open the unit to swap it over.

Are you saying you only have a metal key with no push button fob? If so, you have no transponder chip and circuit board To transfer to a new (cheap) hollow plastic case. (I’m about to do that).
Buying a complete key & fob new I think is quite expensive, and a dealer-only task.

I have a metal key with a black plastic head on it which I thought is a transponder key. I just have no separate fob for the keyless entry. I assumed since the key I have looked like a chip key that the 2002 model didn't have the keyless entry fob built into the key. I know when I decoded the VIN it says the car has: Ignition immobilizer anti-theft feature-inc: "encrypted ignition key w/rolling code & auto relock"

Does the one you have look like this.....

..rather then this?
The second one is the flip key with the alarm sensor chip inside as well as auto lock, courtesy lights, and emergency alarm button.

Yes, mine looks like the key that you linked to, not the fob in the embedded picture. Which is why I wondered if this car would've had a keyless entry remote like this one: https://usparts.volvocars.com/p/Volvo_2 ... 85150.html

Your key has the chip and I'd assume the PO lost the FOB, which is like the one you shared in your link.. I believe, either way, if you buy a FOB, it will need to be programmed by a dealer or skilled locksmith. I have a 2001 with similar set-up. I have picked up a few FOB's from the junkyard, but can't get any to link with the car...not willing to spend the $ at the dealer. Maybe VIDA can do it. Experts on this forum may know.

Contact member yagger or doublebug. If you have a DiCE unit, a laptop & internet connection they can help get you sorted for far less than a dealership.
