98 v70: where to get new keys cut on a budget?

Post by CIK7 »

I have 1 key for my car. Lost it last night while working on my Honda brakes. Found it about 2-3hr later in my Honda trunk. Dumb! I used to use Overland Park Volvo in Kansas City as my key dealer. Three times I sent in blank keys over the last 3 years to get them cut for $5 each+ $4 return shipping. Last time I called, they said they no longer have the machine, thus no ability to cut keys. I need to if there are any Volvo dealers that still cut keys onsite. I called Bill Knight Lincoln/Volvo in Tulsa and they quoted me $30 per dealer (not my) key. I dont want to pay $30. What dealers do you know of that still cut customer keys onsite? I have 4 blanks ready to go.

$5.00 to cut a key. You would be real lucky to to get another place at that price.
I get the key blanks cut at a local independent Locksmith. For something like three times that.

So is it pretty standard practice to have to supply your own blanks?

I got charged $80 to get a key cut for my 98, with no chip. Nobody other than locksmiths can do that type here.

I have bought all (12) blanks on eBay for $10-11 per pair. Very nice. 2 years ago i got 2 blanks cut for 960 or s70 at protech locksmith in idabel. Perfect fit. $17 per key. Went same place about September last year to get 2 blanks cut for current v70. Fit 'eh'. $17 per key. Next day they were useless. Dunno how but i couldnt get either to turn no matter how much i jammed, jimmied, etc. Got 4 of those blanks sitting in drawer.

Local locksmith quoted $120 for key, cut and program for my 03 S80 T6. Still have one key. Do you know if your indie can cut and program without the car? Perhaps sending him the old key?

Vida requires the car to be connected to program keys, from 1999 on , in North America. It can be a remote internet connection like yagger but it needs to be live
