89 240.. How do I r&r the gear shifter w/o damaging knob

Post by Volvo_240_Atari_2600 »

Hello,

89 volvo 240 wagon
216 k miles
automatic Transmission
Florida USA

I just replaced the carpet and seats in my wagon.
I did aldo buy a new gear shifter cover/indicator with one from the salvage yard and I have no clue as to how to remove the black knob on the gear shifter w/o damaging it.

Is there any blown up view that shows how it is removed?

Haynes just shows a miniscule blow up schematic with details of all the components from the gear shifter to the linkage and does not say where to start.

Any help or avdise will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Eric

This is memory based.. my current 240 is a 5 speed.

I think you have to loosen the trim cover, pull it up, and then undo the shifter arm from below and pull it out.
'94 Gunmetal Gray 855 2.4L 100% stock. This is Volvo #7.

Luke,

Thank you for the input.
When you say to "undo from bellow," I gather there is some access to release the nut for the shifter underneath the car?

Won't have much time to get underneath to acess the work involved until the weekend.

By the way... What is a good manual other than Haynes???

Thanks
Eric
