Just purchased 2008 XC90 V8/Black
After losing our 2004 Volvo XC90 T6 the search began for another XC90. We even considered a new generation 2018/2019 XC90 and a 2017 XC60 T6. They were all very nice vehicles but we weren't thrilled about the factory warranty offerings on those vehicles. Its been 2 years since we lost our 2004 XC90 T6 and my wife has been driving a 2007 BMW X3 3.0si. The BMW is a nice vehicle and the 3.0si does have a lot of power but she really wanted another 1st generation Volvo XC90. She has been driving a Volvo since having her 1996 Volvo 850 GLT sedan and has never looked at other vehicles outside Volvo. Here on LINY it's quite difficult to find any 1stgen XC90's for sale...especially a V8 model 2006-2011. I avoided the 2005 model XC90 V8 because of the issue it had with the Balance Shaft Failure due to water get caught in that area. So I was looking specifically at 2006 and up. Finally about 2 weeks ago I found this Black 2008 XC90 V8 and finally came to an agreement with the owner. We brought her home yesterday after switching insurance/registration and plates from our 2004 XC70. We were very lucky to find a really clean Black XC90, usually people ruin the paint by now. The interior is in good shape, the rims are clean and she runs good with the exception of a possible issue with the FPS/fuel pressure regulator or possible fuel filter. She'll need tires in a few months from now but she has matching Continental pure contacts...I hate when people use mismatched tires on an AWD vehicle.

The balance shaft issue was dealt with at engine serial number 6833. The first 6832 engines are the ones to avoid. To avoid the problem you wipe off the sticker on the front of the engine and check the serial number. The sticker should be on the front of the block, center and next to two idler pulleys.shiloh51933 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2022, 07:25 I avoided even considering the 2005 model XC90 V8 because of the issue it had with the Balance Shaft Failure due to water get caught in that area.

Back CB shaft valley issue is a hit or miss in my opinion even after 6833. Someone who has a better feel for manufacturing changes can suggest when the "new" rear bearing was installed but I know that a modified part (might have just been better sealed) was implemented sometime after 2006. You'll see old and new bearings if you scope out the valley, old are blue seals (my '06), new are black (my '08).
There may be a drilled hole at the bottom of the rear bearing casting depression or there may not (my '06 has a hole, my '08 doesn't). In this regard, the standing concern of someone rinsing a cold motor and letting it sit still remains (as is the need to scope out the area so you know what you're getting when doing a PPI).
This is a 12,000 SN range motor with a hole- This is a 32,000 SN range motor with no hole-
** While you check your "new" vehicle's sunroof drains (all XC90) to make sure they're all good, check the 3-way washer regulator that's mounted right under the passenger side hood sprayer. Give the cap a little wiggle, if it moves at all, replace (PN in link below). Wrote something about this last week along with my typical observations of the Yamaha V8 for anyone new to the powertrain- https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/what ... st-7893593
edit- add photos, link

Nice find Shane. I’ll be looking for one of those in a few years.
Did you know I’m a 1/2 time Port Jefferson resident now? Trying to wrap things up in Albany and move there full time.

Thank you.
Your moving to Port Jeff full time?
I use to hang in Port Jeff all the time in HS and the Steam Room was the spot if you wanted to take a girl to eat...it was impressive compared to Mickey D's at that age.
I hope everything works out the way you plan.

Things are still recovering from Covid closures but I love the community and shops. Living 5 minutes walk from ferry so commuting is easy

It's only been 3 weeks since the purchase of our beautiful 2008 Volvo XC90 V8 model and already she got to drive in 2 feet of snow. I knew the snow was coming so we ponied up for some brand new matcing set or 4 Continental Cross Contact LX25's. She drives beautifully with plenty of power and handles the snow very well!! We feel like we are at home inside this vehicle, the interior has everything the way we like it. I have a Saabaru 9-2x(Saab's version of Subaru WRX), which is a great vehicle w/AWD but when the snow in the roads freeze over it's a bit harder riding around. What I always liked about all of the Cross Country vehicles we've own is the ride during harse weather...especially frozen snow covered roads.
