Downhill downshifting for engine braking

Post by June »

A while back someone wanted to know how to downshift to use engine baking feature. I'm driving a 2021 XC60 T6 service loaner and have taken it to Ft. Smith, AR. When descending a grade, lightly press the brake pedal for three seconds and the transmission will automatically downshift and use the engine rpm for maintaining speed. If another downshift is desired press brake petal three more seconds and transmission will downshift again.
This feature holds gear allowing engine braking until accelerator is pressed again. This only works on a downgrade. The car seems to know the difference. Using manual mode does not allow engine braking on downgrade for some reason?... June

June, are you on another legendary road trip? Will there be pictures and commentary?

No, I am moving to Ft. Smith. My S80 spent 7 weeks at Volvo for repairs due to engine light on and had all fluids flushed and brakes and rotors all around. Had it back one day and engine light came back on. Dealership told me to drive it like that as it was a month before next appointment available. Yes I was beyond mad since the repairs were $3,500... a few days later the car died on the interstate beltway on the west side which is beyond scary.. after two weeks without a car my dealer pulled a CPO 21 XC60T6 as a loaner. It's pushing two months and no word on my S80... I told them I needed to go to Arkansas on a family emergency which is true, and my Service Advisor's response was "You have a loaner!". So I am tooling around Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri in a dealership loaner! Hit a 7% grade and learned how to engine brake with the modern-day Volvo  . I switched from a Android phone to a satellite phone which does not have a camera, otherwise I definitely would be posting photos of my trip. June

Good luck with everything, I hope you missed the winter weather crossing from the south to the midwest.
