1998 S70 n/a base NW Arkansas (free to good home)

Post by McKennaR »

1998 S70 N/A base auto.
306,000 hard miles
Original engine/trans.
Starts, runs*, stops.
Located in Bentonville, AR
Free to good home

*For long enough to drive onto your trailer. More in "bad/ugly" section below.

The Good:
-Volans
-Spare set of studded snows on steelies
-pads/rotors done 10k mi ago
-some spare parts
-factory roof crossbars
-some how, perhaps out of spite alone, starts every time a battery with sufficient charge is attached.
-older ipd lowering springs
-older Bilstein touring shocks/struts
-clean title

The bad and/or ugly:
-Timing belt service waaaaay overdue. Like, 10+ years and 15k miles overdue.
-Runs great cold, misfires heavily & stalls out when warm. Replaced fuel pump relay, problem persists. Ignition coil is original, bougicord wires are 10+ yrs old, as are plugs, cap and rotor. Probably will fix the issue if replaced? Idk, it's not really something I can sink time/$$ into anymore.
-needs all fluids changed
-strut top bearings pop when you turn the wheel
-A/C condenser has hole, evaporator likely toast, receiver drier looks like it's spent it's life at the bottom of the Atlantic. Who knows if the compressor works.
-Needs tires (sidewall bulges and aged-out)
-Volans (refinished) are basically all some form of bent or curbed. They have tread though.
-interior generally crap. Steering wheel chunking off, seats kinda worn out, buttons sticky, headliner:present for duty but that's about it
-brakes make noise, possibly from sitting but pads/rotors have 10k mi on them
-parking brake doesn't work
-cv boots are missing in action. CVs don't make much noise but they probably will start if driven regularly.
-underbody rust. Not through but just generally rusty underneath.
-hood is rattle can silver
-Front bumper is from an XC and was professionally painted and looked great until it met with a hit and run driver when street parked a few years back
-someone ice-picked the roof one time about 15 yrs ago. Silicone is keeping the water out of the 1 hole it made.
-bumps, bruises, scrapes, scratches basically everywhere.
-"Lifetime" tint job bubbling on rear window. I don't think the tint shop banked on the cars lifetime being this long. Free fix if you can figure out how to get the car to California Tint in Northridge, CA.
-if you try to force turn the ignition with the steering wheel locked, it'll spin forever and not start the car.
-trunk popper on driver's door inop
-large evap code CEL
-battery from 2019 but iffy
-alternator is of the 100a variety and uh... Works, slowly.
-trans whines in 1st but has done that for the past 100k miles w/o getting worse so... ?

I'm sure I'm missing something. This car has been used and borderline abused for the past 20+ years. I'm amazed it still runs. But per the POA and code enforcement, it's time to move on.

This is a very difficult ad for me to write. I've been working on it since roughly March of this year. We bought this car new in October of 1997 & I've known it and driven it for all of my driving life (I'm 40 now). It went through 3 teenage drivers and 16 years of Maine Winters before moving to the south (Southern CA and then Arkansas).

The car has a ton of stories and has a ton of sentimental value for my entire family, which is why I've kept it for so long. It was my Dad's favorite car and he passed away recently. He loved hearing the stories about how the car lived on in my possession, going all over the country, from coast to coast half a dozen times.

Unfortunately I've reached a point where I can no longer rely on it as a daily driver or even dependable winter car and it's just sitting in my yard, pissing off code enforcement, my neighbors, the POA and my wife. I drive it around the block occasionally, but because of the rough running issue when it gets to operating temp, I don't take it on long trips. I'd rather the car go to someone who can use it vs. it rotting in my yard.

I can't keep it in the garage because the wife said I needed a newer car with a warranty and working air con as a dependable daily driver and kid transporter. So I did the right thing and bought a used Mustang GT which now occupies my garage spot.

So, while I write this advert from the driver's seat of that Mustang that has turned into my bedroom, living room and office now that the wife kicked me out of the house (j/k) I've decided to try and make amends by "selling" the Volvo.

If I had a barn or warehouse or other climate controlled storage, I'd keep this car forever.

Beggars can't be choosers but I'd love for this to go to a good home and not be parted out or gambler/lemons'd. Perhaps a parent/child project.

All I ask is that if it does get parted out or gambler 500'd, lie to me and tell me it's living it's best life, frolicking in strawberry fields with all of its friends. Just quietly, in the dark of the night, drop the driver & front passenger seats off on my doorstep so I can make office chairs out of them and I'll know what happened to the car (invoice me via PayPal for the gas and/or seats).

I have the title, it is by some stroke of luck clean and clear, not salvage. It is in my name.

Pictures attached, I think. No the white 745 isn't for sale or free or included w/this car, it belongs to a friend who is coming out to get it, hopefully before code enforcement comes back...

Little known fact about the ArKansas River. It starts in Colorado as the Arkansas (Ar-can-saw) River. When it flows into Kansas, it becomes the ArKansas (Ar-can-sis) River. When it flows into Oklahoma, it again becomes the Arkansas (Ar-can-saw) River.
I still claim Kansas citizenship after 40 years out of the state.

It is indeed. The Mustang spent the past 3 months at the Ford dealership waiting on parts, so I've moved the S70 temporarily into the Ford's spot indoors.
