Which trans cooler line to put external filter in

Post by volvodork »

I've decided to try the TransGo valve body and solenoid rebuild on my 2001 X/C 70 based on the amazing thread detailing this from others here. I did do the "down-under" work-around by puncturing the internal filter screen after getting the pump "whine" due to low flow and had great success (initially) until now when the transmission warms up and I get the usual delayed/hard shifts and can only start moving in manual 3rd gear selection. Previous owner never serviced trans and it was in terrible shape (thus the clogged filter screen).
I did add the external filter when doing the screen "modification" but now I'm having my doubts on whether I put it on the correct line to the radiator cooler.
Can anyone give me a definitive answer (pictures help a lot) on which line is the OUTPUT from the trans in order to get the filter direction correct? I want to make sure it's proper for after the valve body rebuild.

Bottom hose is the output from transmission, upper hose (attached to the valve body cover) is the input. The filter placement is in upper cooler line, direction from cooler to transmission.

Honestly, I'd go with the donor transmission, really.

I put mine in the line marked "return cooled ATF."

If you don't have an aux cooler, this diagram still works, just imagine the aux cooler isn't there, or that the aux cooler in the diagram is your in-line filter.
