Hi Fellow Members,
So this is my first post and thanks for all the knowledge that you all share here.
I am having trouble with a 2010 S80 3.2 I6 that I bought from private party, unfortunately I did not take the car through inspection before buying. Car was very seldom driven by previous owner and last tune up (oil change, spark plug change, etc) was an year ago, since then car has been driven only 1.5k Mike's, for a total odometer reading of close to 21.5 k in 10.5 years.
Issue details:- from very first day of my ownership, car was misfiring with cold start, felt like a low battery issue to me, but as soon as the car started I got check engine light on continuously, drove the car it runs very smooth, no issues while rubbing, no rough idle either.
Now this issue happened for 3 days continuously, only happening while cold start in chilly Denver mornings this month, no issue after that first start. I got the obd codes checked and got P0300 for random misfire and few cylinder specific misfire codes like P0301, P0302, etc for I think 5 out of 6 cylinders.
Fix done:-- Opened the hood, listened and could hear some whining sound from battery compartment after the car engine was stopped, post first drive of the day. Thought bad battery was causing the starting terrible and may be misfires also due to insufficient voltage for ignition coils or fuel pump etc and had the battery replaced yesterday. Now as I removed battery the CEL light went away, car passed state Emission test and well right after and everything was good.
Next morning when I started the car (with new battery) it again misfired and then a new message came up on dashboard " Try to slow down or shift up" with CEL flashing, put car in reverse and it started shuddering heavily, but as soon as I reversed out of parking space and put transmission in Drive, suddenly the CEL and message on dashboard went away, car drove perfectly fine again. After driving for a mile or so, shut down the engine and checked under the hood, was able to hear same whining sound from battery compartment. Did not pull any codes afterwards yet.
Now I have no clue what's happening----
1. Why s brand new battery is making this whining sound ? (Attached video)
2 what might be catching these new shuddering symptom and flashing CEL ?
3. Engine is still misfiring at cold start, why ?
So I never have faced any issue while driving during the day or starting the car later in the day with misfires or anything else, except few misfires on older battery, when I trying out to start and stop the engine multiple times in few mins.

Apologies for the long post, but please really need your help and feedback, I am lost here.
Thanks

Did you get this problem resolved? My son's S80 just gave him a series of coil codes, 300,304,305,306 and two fuel pump codes, 87 and 628. His car suddenly had a very rough idle and then died and would not start.
It is currently at a shop near him (too far for me to investigate) and they say it is the fuel pump. They'll have to drop the tank etc etc. Expensive!
They're initial quick diagnosis was there was no pressure at the fuel rail and of course the two codes, 087 and 0628.
Although you don't report any fuel delivery codes the symptoms sounds similar.
Thanks

We are going to need more information.
How do you know it is Misfiring? (is the check engine light flashing?)
Does it Misfire at the initial high idle or after the idle drops?
In case you don't know the 3.2 is also used in the Land Rover LR2.
Here is a thread to take a look at on the Land Rover board

Note: the root cause for your problem could be different than the root cause in the link but there is plenty of information in there to review.
Good luck

The diagnosis should be confirmed with a fuel pressure measurement at the rail, not just the code.

Skymongrel,
If I were in your position I would start with the Fuel Pressure sending unit.
Mine failed on my 2010 S80.
And in this link Jimmy mentioned that it is a $40 part that may fix fuel pressure problems.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forum ... hp?t=87861
The person that wrote the post didn't confirm that the sensor fixed the problem but he did replace it and he hasn't posted about Fuel pressure for 3 years since the initial post. And he did have the 3.2 after replacing the sensor because he posted about the PCV.
Here is what I did (Note: I got a different code but my code never came back)

I don't recommend starting with the fuel pump. It is difficult to replace and there was a thread about replacing the pump 5 times due to a kinked hose.
Good luck

The shop pulled the misfire codes 300, 304 305 306, and my son said it was vibrating and running rough just before it died. He also, commented about the brake pedal acting weird. The shop also pulled the 087 and 628 codes for fuel pump low pressure.
I called the shop and they confirmed that there was no fuel going to the fuel rail, I did mention the fuel pressure sensor. I had no choice but to authorize them to diagnose the problem thoroughly and drop the tank to check. They said the pump was bad but not the module associated with it.
This is a tough one not having personal access to the car but I guess I've saved lots of money on other repairs I've done to warrant a splurge on a shop repair. Let you know how it turns out.

It’s tough with the college kid car. I’ve lived through six of those without getting an out of town bill but I front loaded a lot of repairs to avoid those. Managed to hand off everyone into a job without a car payment , too. Hopefully that will pay off when I can’t reach my Depends
Oops , gotta go.
If you are comfortable let us know where Jr is. I keep watch out for a couple of kids in school near me from MVS folks

Skylar is in Buffalo...actually working now! Yay!
I asked the shop to save the old fuel pump for me. Just in case this gets ugly.
Thanks for the advice and offer!

Well....looks like I'm getting screwed. They put the new pump in the S80 (2007) and it doesn't start! Now they tell me its the module that controls it. "Usually the fuel pump takes out the module but we thought it was OK very common". So want to trust these guys but not getting a good feeling about this.
