V70 XC, operates normal in reverse, accelerates slowly at first in 1

Post by Rocket999 »

It is normal in reverse, does have a good (new) clank jerk going into reverse, otherwise normal in reverse
put it in drive it needs serious revs to get it movinmg at all, if I was at the bottom of a hill Id need a tow truck

Diagnostics so far:
- seemed like not enough ATF same as in an earlier episode, topped up ATF castrol Dex/merc III, it had lost more than I realized recently but that did not correct it
- with all 4 wheels off the ground, the wheels rotate apparently normally with engine and transmission engaged both revers and drive
- with engine off in N and D and R , all four rotate easily, fronts a little "thicker" takes more effort
- when it does roll forward, with abnormal high engine revs, ... there is a new odd sound whirr whish sound when revs are spinning up
- seems a bit like maybe torque converter isn't delivering torque to trans, except in reverse .

Thanks for any comments in advance

you guys really helped me thru a rough time

thx again

with all 4 wheels off the ground and spinning driven by motor, touch the brake pedal, horrendous crunching grind from front brakes, and wierd rather strong vibration through the brake pedal

Get a look at the brakes next .... i jumped on them during the accident, they should handle that.

Engine running perfect
This is AW50-42LE transmission
Owners manual is equivocal on wither it is 4 vs 5 speed
starts from stationary real real slow, then seeming normal above 5 or 7 mph
I wonder is it stuck in winter mode with sluggish moveing from stationary
After collision:
no more vertical arrow on dash while in postion 3,2,or 1
no more horn

the posted gear shift lever ..... P N D 3 2 1 robert says it is 5 speed

can anyone comment or verify, is this 4 spd or is it 5 spd?

Your Park Neutral Position switch on top of the trans might be knocked loose after a crash. It communicates to the car computer, opens and closes solenoids, etc. How many miles on the trans? Have you done a full drain and looked in the pan?
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell. 😕
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

Thank you for your input

Robert S. thinks this AW50-42 may be a 5 speed, I say 4, according to transtec website

Trans: about 120K

I replaced the PNP about 2 years ago, so its age isn't it but a jarring crash may have

never took the pan off

did a dexIII mrc flush yesterday but never took the pan off.

what would one look for inside the pan??

I get the impression stuck in winter .... ie gears 3 and 4 only

vertical dash arrow light no longer lit in position 3, 2, 1 as it was before crash

It’s a 4 speed. Aw55-xx denotes a five speed.

Look at the plate in the transmission to confirm. Don’t rely on paperwork and internet for point info like this

If you used an aftermarket pnp, they suck

Try this test. Drive the car with and without the W button depressed. It should be noticeably different on driving from a stop.

If it isn’t, you are stuck in W mode

Bit sounds like you are stuck in W

My daughters dog likes to push the W button on her Car on the highway. You don’t notice it until you stop , then go to restart and have no power ( your car is in 2 or 3 gear and torque is reduced )
