Ran over median would the transfer case be affected?

Post by Meb0091 »

I have a Volvo S60, I ran over a median and my car is making a crazy noise that sounds like metal on metal I also disconnected my exhaust. I let my neighbors friend take a look at it and he thinks it’s something to do with the transfer case. Other mechanic friends Have heard the noise and thought it was something scraping my drive shaft. They seem to think it has nothing to do with the transfer case. Any opinion on this would help because I don’t wanna pay for something that isn’t going to fix the issue thank you

It’s not a complete impossibility. The transfer case is pretty well protected, high enough up that I would look elsewhere before expecting to see that contact was made with it. From the video/sound clip you posted the other day I am going to say that the noise is coming from some exhaust component interfering/scraping on the spinning driveshaft which sends power to the rear wheels. Basically, get it in the air safely (4x Jack stands appropriately placed) and have someone start it and put it in gear. Should be able to figure out the source pretty quickly from the vantage point of a creeper.

Agree with Pete, sounds external in video. Need to get under the car and look for interferences. Ideally want to spin the driveshaft to check for rubs.

While possible to be a transfer case check the easier external stuff first.

It's doubtful that theres anything more serious than the exhaust shield is rubbing on something that rotates. I've encountered this on 3 occasions now where a horrible sound can be remedied by a couple sheet metal screws and some gentle bending. Might even be that the exhaust system is rubbing on the propshaft.
