Sun roof won't open

Post by Sveedy »

Is there a way to open the sun roof, or remove the glass when it starts to not work ? Months ago it stopped opening, but still tilted.
I found a small piece of black plastic up in the track, so I figured that part of the track broke. But since it still tilted open, I didn't worry about it. But now it starts to tilt but stops before getting anywhere. Starts to try and retract, but won't do that either.
I read that you can manually operate it from under the overhead courtesy lights, but does that work if the track is damaged ?
If not, then how do you remove the glass to fix / replace the track ?

I'm going to try and pull the trim ( per Roberts diy ) and see if this is actually a simple fix.....

Be SUPER careful with that sunroof trim. It has a tight grip on the headliner and is very fragile. I destroyed one at a junkyard when trying to remove it in a hurry. I recommend using a junkyard car for practice and to fashioning a removal tool before doing your own. Somehow, a tool must be wedged between the top edge of the trim and the headliner to disengage the clip built in to the trim. This might be possible with the glass open.

See my sunroof trim removal post and the following comments for some info. See my sunroof unit removal post for more.

Two RobertDIY videos about the sunroof:
Rearview removal, motor access, glass removal -
Headliner removal -

I like tip about manually moving the sunroof using the screw in the motor by the rear view mirror. Try that before removing the headliner and sunroof unit.

Ultimately, removing the entire sunroof unit is straightforward: Remove most of the trim touching the headliner including the A pillars and sunroof trim, disconnect any wires in the headliner, remove the headliner, unscrew the sunroof unit.

When I finally repair my sunroof, I would like to write up a full DIY about the procedure.

Knowing Volvo's love affair with O-rings, I imagine that there are a few involved. I think there is one in my rear view mirror.
I'm not planning on touching the perimeter trim; just the two strips of plastic hiding the track / screws. Then I'm hoping I can just lift out the glass to access the track.
