06 S60 AWD radiator swap + trans refill info please

Post by scot850 »

I posted in another radiator update for my buddies son's S60 and I have 2 transmission questions:

1) When you swap a radiator, you will lose some ATF due to the oil cooler pipes being removed and any oil in the cooler. Abscate advises that is around 100ml or so. To add, is there a dip-stick access to refill with? I thought on the later trans there was not anyway to do this easily.

2) When you remove the trans oil cooler lines from the radiator, are you well advised to replace either the 'O' rings or the retaining clips or both? I would do this on a P80 but have not done a P2 radiator before.

Thanks,

Neil.

Perfect time to do a 3-4 liter drain and fill , just replace the amount pumped out

Replace those o-rings. 4 , I think?

There is a dipstick way down to the drivers side of the engine. Yellow dipstick with a little securing clip you can pull it past. I use a long trans funnel with a piece of clear hose attached, tough to get it in the fill pipe. I had to cut and tape bottom of hose lengthwise to get it small enough in diameter.

I too believe there is two orings on each cooler pipe. I got by reusing after a cooler flush but would replace.

1. There is a yellow dipstick on top of the trans. Pop the air intake pipe out and you can more easily reach down in there. There's a retaining clip that you'll need to pull out of the way before you can remove the dipstick, just the regular bent metal kind that you move a bit to the side. Buy the longest thinnest funnel you can find and stuff it down into the dipstick hole. IPD sells one for $2 that will do the trick:

Good spot to do a drain and refill or full blown drain and flush. Even if you just want to refill it, refilling the trans can be troublesome as the oil level should be checked while hot (80C I think) to make sure it's got the correct amount in there to keep it happy.

2. For the rings on the trans lines, yeah, plan to replace the clips since you may inadvertently break one when you unplug them, like I did. Better to just already have them on hand than to get stuck at that point. Both the o-rings and clips are available on amazon and i think ipd, don't forget to use the link(s)

Many thanks to all you guys! Much appreciated. I could have sworn that the post 05 P2's did away with the dip-stick. Guess I need to go out and look at the 06 XC70!!

I think the advice on the 'O' ring replacement is sound and is what I would do if it were my car. Also makes sense to get the trans clips as a back up as they are bound to be crusty by now!

Doing the oil swap might be worth considering, but the owners seem to remember the PO of the car saying he had the trans oil done recently. I'll need to check if it uses the 3309? ATF a in my 00 V70R which has the 5 speed auto trans as well.

Really appreciate this as I have not done much on the P2 before, but also makes me think I need to get my eyes on the car before ordering parts to make sure we get everything we may need. Don't want to get stuck on someone else's car as we don't have al the part! :o

Wow! Just looked up the cost of 2 trans clips and 4 'O' rings from Volvo at the discounted rate. $70 CDN including tax and free shipping. Aftermarket kit from IPD is $7 US for all 8 'O' rings and 2 clips + $18 US shipping!! Volvo want $15 for each clip!!

Would anyone have an issue using this kit?

Actually, I might have the rings and clips from my 00 'R' spares already. Now just where would those be..............?

Thanks,

Neil.

Plenty of PPS clips and o rings available at your local carquest, tell them to order through WorldPac. I didn't mind going aftermarket for these parts. I spent about $10 total a couple years ago I believe.

Pretty low risk, if they would leak easy to replace. Carefully remove old ones so they have them as a backup.
