Gas cap replacement

Post by 454cid »

I'd like to replace my gas cap. It dawned on me that mine is not original. It's a locking cap, and I don't have the key. I'm a bit concerned that it could accidentally lock by itself.... or glove-box itself.

I've found this: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/4676/Fu ... 044-113515

Is this what my 96 850 would have had from Volvo, or is it a later Volvo cap that just works on my car? I'm a little gun shy of paying that much for a cap and not getting an original. I did that with my truck (although it wasn't this much $$$) and I got a later cap that "works" on my truck, but props the fuel door open slightly.

If it's not the original design, I'd rather just buy a non-locking aftermaket cap.

FCP Euro also list that part number as suitable for most Volvo models from 240 onwards including the 96 850 models.

Strange this is I have found 2 different part numbers on Volvo dealer websites.

https://parts.volvovilla.com/p/Volvo_19 ... 75962.html

On this website is shows part #9475962 and fitting Volvos up to and including P80 models and first gen V50/S40 to 2004 but not P2 models. It is also cheaper than from your US websites!!

I also see this part number but the difference is it is RED in color # 9142541

This is NOT an original 850 cap. The 850 caps came with a little plastic loop so you could hang them on the fuel door while refilling.
The cap you listed surely works fine, though.

This is a 3$ item at a salvage yard there are zillions of them. If you can hang on a bit I can locate a few easily. I have 3 or so of my own. Save the 40 $ difference just get a new gasket, OEM Volvo or maybe the HD one from IPD. Yes, I wouldn't go aftermarket on this item myself.

There's no such thing as a $3 item at my closest yard. They told me several years ago that $5 was the bottom limit. Last time I was there they wanted to charge me something like $25 for a broken part that I was going to have to disassemble along with my current part and build one good one. I ended up getting them down to $10.

I can wait, if you can find a good one or two on your next trip to the salvage yard.

Can you guys tell me if a 1998 or 1999 gas cap will work in any P80?

Need to know for this replacement.

I've been meaning to get back to this...

Here's a picture of the gas cap installed that Abscate sent. First I scrubbed it up. Then I swapped the gasket from the locking cap on, and used a bit of silicone grease on it. I also sprayed some vinyl protectant on it that I normally reserve for my engine compartments, just to make it look a little better.

Thanks Abscate!

Man, if I had cleaned it up I would’ve tripled the price.
