I have always used card board like vtl suggests on any head gasket where I fear damage. I also get a helper to help position it.

My recollection on my 2001 XC70 was I pulled head without manifold, but some studs stayed and some didn't so it was still a fight. The gain was it was lighter. I did slip cardboard underneath during removal to prevent dents, and scratches once I saw fight coming.

You do need to release the exhaust from below and let it hang. I put some blocks underneath to limit movement which would stress the exhaust.
