AWD coupler sleeve assembly lube

31256008 Is the correct part number for 1999 AWD collar sleeve. My original coupler spline was still functioning but was worn to the point that there was some play on the coupler/female. . Male spline still looked new on angle gear.
What assembly lube are you guys using on the splines?
I'm sure Volvo has a specified tube of slippery goop but I've not found it yet.
I was thinking of using CV joint lube as it's chock full of moly but my feeling but my second feeling is it may be too thin and run away from splines when the heat gets there.
There are very specified spline lubes available but again I'm just wondering what you guys are using.

Where are you wanting to out the assembly lube? If it is between the sleeve and the splines of the internal shaft of the angle gear I wouldn't use anything more than a light coat of angle gear oil if anything. As it is a fixed shaft and the collar is likewise they need to be tight to each other.

The only place I would lube is the outside of the sleeve when installing it into the oil seal in the transmission.

Yeah I was thinking to lube inside the spline coupler ... Just seemed there was a lot thick rusty coloured goop in there when I disassembled it.
I've cleaned up all the rusty coloured goop but now seems right to re lube it for assembly.

Strange it is rusty? As there is oil in both sides of the coupler not sure how rust got in there??

I would do what you have done and then a film of the angle gear oil on the splines and the inside of the coupler should be adequate. Use the angle gear oil as there is little of it in there anyway so best not to contaminate it with ATF.

Is this your original angle gear for your car you have removed to repair, or a replacement one that has been sitting outside or somewhere damp? I can't understand why there is also rust on the outside of the collar as well?

120k kms original mileage so I believe it's the original gear.
