Last year a shaggy college kid had a beat up 850 wagon stranded at the curb a half block away, looking forlorn. Here comes this "old guy" dragging a big floor jack and tools down the street to help him. I actually think he was genuinely surprised a random stranger came to help. I said, stop by any time, I have 850 tools.

We are getting a little off topic here, please forgive us Matt.

But even my daughters (19 and 21) are starting to find it cool to drive the old Volvos. My younger one the other day told that there was this old dude ( ! , probably my age

) started talking to her in the grocery store parking lot about what a cool 850 (her sisters) she was driving and that he used to own one. Priceless stuff.

The 850 (Harold) is now with my older one in Boston now. She is commuting with it to her school where she is student teaching. Plus she is racking up a ton of miles going shopping and moving people and stuff around. I wonder what kind of comments she is getting. Especially from her rich friends who get brand new Minis as a present for their graduation

She loves that car and is totally cool with it, that much I know. She even asked me if she can keep Harold for when she is getting a job and starting the real adult life.

On topic - I got my recall letter and we're hoping a day trip over to Spokane (3 hours) to get it changed out might be possible. Black will do nicely in Betty, thank you.

It's funny, I also have an Audi airbag recall letter for our A4 wagon. And no dealer here as well.

Called my dealer Monday and seems they still needed to order parts...on their list but they said the list is long.

I got my new airbag installed and I'm happy to report that the R steering wheel in my base V70 wasn't a problem.
Initially I was a little concerned about this and went to the dealer to talk to them. They said it shouldn't be a problem but let's confirm with corporate. That's when I thought: Oh boy, here we go.
After all Danbury Volvo made it very easy though, great service.
No more "R" on the airbag, but that's just fine with me. It always felt a little pretentious anyway.

For those with "not black" airbags: you can get it replaced with the only color choice available - the black, and transfer the guts into your airbag's "skin". Of course, you need to replace your nice airbag with something second hand before going to dealer - the dealer won't give your old airbag back.

It makes sense even for those with black airbags, since the new one protrudes about 1/8" or more in every direction, which makes it a crappy finger feeling.

Does anyone know who made the replacement airbag??? It looks tacky... I certainly hope it's made by a reliable company, not Takata?! Does anyone know? Volvo would not say. June

They reorganized Takata and it’s now called TakaTaka….

I never understood Volvo's reasoning on these recalls. It's like they pretend Canada is an ice block year round. We regularly get 40deg C temperatures when factoring in humidity. It's like the fuel pump recall. How can you isolate it to certain states when we get crippling temperatures in the north? /rant
