If I had to redo an axle every six months I would gouge my eyes out with the splines

2-3 hours of heavy labor, so $50-75 bucks on my clock. Better to get a good used OEM one.

scot850 wrote: 18 Apr 2017, 21:36 I used the link that cn90 gave and ordered one of the bearings out of curiosity. The bearing is used by Ford on the Transit and Fiesta from the info on the manufacturers website and used as a carrier bearing. The manufacturer is Dutch and have a good name.

I had thought at $12US with free international shipping you can't go too far wrong and hopefully it may prove a resource for others in the future.

I tried ordering one from the link I added from the UK. Part was 12 pounds (no 20% tax to pay) but I was staggered when they added 104 pounds ($130US for shipping to Canada! And to think I used to think that shipping from the US was (and is) ridiculous! I may pick one up in the UK when over there in a few weeks. Hopefully by then the ones from Turkey may have arrived and I can see what sort of quality they have or if they are rip-off copy parts.

The SKF info is somewhere for the 98 and older bearing so I may try to contact SKF to see if they can supply them and at what cost.

Thanks for the help guys.

Stumbled onto this thread and wondered if you had the order information for the UK bearing

I want to order 2, have them delivered in the UK, then bring them back in Seotember

These came out of Turkey and not the UK. They shipped with airmail. I may not have the info an longer as I gave all the receipts to my buddy that bought the V70 base. I'll have a look though. I'm sure it was on Ebay.

The Ebay listing for the Turkish bearings is still good:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/45x75x19-mm-be ... 2384573896

$12/bearing US.

The Buyparts link also still works and has 2 bearings listed in UK at around 14-21 pounds UK.

Stumbled on this thread after having bad luck with two aftermarket axles. My passenger was giving me a high speed vibration, but I figured I'd replace both. That's just my M.O when it comes to left/right parts.

Before installing the passenger axle I compared the bearings and there was a little slop in the OEM one. Not much, but I assume enough to cause that vibration I was feeling. That however seems to be fixed with the aftermarket axle! My plan was to have someone rebuild the OEM axles while the aftermarket ones were on, but no one in my area will do it.

Now it's actually the aftermarket driver side that's giving me a low speed wobble. I tried two different aftermarket brands and they're both doing the same thing. With the car in the air and wheel off you can see the wobble happening. When I put the OEM axle back in as a test, it didn't do it, but I must have messed up the boot pulling it off because it slung grease everywhere when I reinstalled it. So I'm going to rebuild the driver side OEM axle ASAP, and then attempt to do the same with the passenger, most importantly the carrier bearing.

I know price wise it doesn't make sense to buy the OEM ones from a place like FCP, I got both aftermarket axles for $200. But they're not running smoothly like they should. I don't want to spend $600 and axle, but I also want a car that rides smoothly. If you have good initial luck with axles, what brand did you run? I'm going to see if rebuilding them myself solves my problems and I'll update here how my experience goes!

I think Abscate recently used some axle(s?) from Detroit axle, but don't quote me on that.

As you can see aftermarket axles can be ok or a lottery on how quickly they fail. I had one that was awful and didn't realise it until the cheap boots failed and I replaced with a used Volvo axle. What I thought was a transmission vibration disappeared.

You could try Erie VoVo and see if they have a used Volvo one or someone like vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento.

In Canada there is also Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island. Remember you are paying in CDN$! Shipping is possibly an issue though.

Good luck!

Does anyone know the average lifespan of the bearing (on the R side axle) itself?

Not really sure. The ones that I have had go bad have been in the 150+ mile range, but many factors may affect this lifespan. Here with lots of salt on the roads and temperature changes may cause them to fail earlier.

You may be able to check by jacking the front up and lying underneath (car properly supported!), and spinning the RH wheel and feeling the bearing for vibration or rumbling.
