Power steering fluid

What kind of power steering fluid do I put in my 2002 V70 Volvo? The manual says ATF. Is it Automatic Transmission Fluid?

I just had the same question recently. Essentially, yes ATF but there are some exceptions.

I would extract a little and see what color it is. If it is a reddish color then likely ATF. Pentosin, cannot be mixed with that. It is a more green/blue based on the Volvo stuff I bought.

Also, I looked at the fluid, and it was a brownish-gold color. It looked similar to oil or conventional power steering fluid.

Since the stuff already in the car is brown, and not pink like atf, would something like this https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/PSF9800 work?

That's not the right stuff, it is probably Pentosin. Golden brown would not be ATF so likely it is Pentosin which is usually green or can be other colors, especially when old. You want to put in either Pentosin or ATF but not mix them.

Lots of ways to buy Pentosin PS fluid but here is an easy one e.g. Walmart etc https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/PAFAS268Y

The user manual says ATF but I think that may be a misprint for the early P2 cars. My 06 and 07 definitely use Pentosin. I will update a little later I want to look it up in VIDA and see which fluid it recommends for your 02.

For the link you gave, the brand is Prestone instead of Pentosin. Would the fluid you linked still work?

My earlier car (P80 2000 MY) can use either but again it lists ATF in the handbook. AS I was working in the parts department at Volvo for a short time I had the guys check what I had and it was actually Pentosin.

Erik will have to answer the question on the Walmart query as I have no idea. For all the mount I use Volvo Pentosin but I know others supply a similar product but not under the Volvo name.
