Goetikered!

Today, I goetikered all my cooling group hoses with confidence, verve, and élan; thereby cementing myself in the annals of the verdant literary oasis.

Finally received my plug wires.... Fedex seemed to like holding on to them at every stop before letting them go to the next stop, for some reason. They were supposed to be here last Friday! I'm not sure if they're actually Made in France anymore. They give no indication where they're made, just Bougicord/EFI-Automotive-Service.

Got new Michelin Defenders installed at Discount Tire. One of the guys wanted to see the headlight wipers work :-)

Even here in Alberta with one of the lowest fuel prices in Canada, gas prices have almost tripled from where we were mid-covid. We are now paying about $5.4/US gallon for 91 octane gas. Regular (all my cars list to use Premium of course!) is around $4.80 US/gallon.

Only possible bright spot is the Alberta government is dropping the provincial sales tax of $0.13/litre on 1st April to try to balance the Liberal national government jacking their carbon tax yet again.

Fortunately a tank of gas typically lasts me a month these days but a refill is close to $100 US.

On the positive, I followed up on an ad on Facebook Marketplace which I seldom look at. It was for a LH front door lock assembly for a P80 with 2 stage locks (part # 8626183) that is still in the blue box and sealed inside! All for $100 CDN (about $75 US). When I looked up the price of a new one on FCP website I nearly fell off my seat. $306 US! That doesn't for me include shipping or border taxes. Fortunately I don't need it just now but I will add to the stash. Knowing the 'R' it will probably fail soon. Both the rears are failing because of the overload resistors failing in hot weather.

The reason I also went to get this as the person was selling it as they no longer had the house. Reason for low price was they were moving. Really nice guy. He then asked me if I could use some other parts as he couldn't be bothered selling them. In the small pile I got 6 brand new NGK BKR6IEX Iridium spark plugs which are listed for P80 turbos. Here in Canada that is close to $90 CDN or about $68 US. Also there were several headlight bulbs from a Volvo 740. All new.

So the moral of the story is to buy parts from folks who are advertising the parts as they have sold the vehicle! You never know what else may get passed your way! :D

Dangerous looking at stuff like that, now there is a Spectra brand new P80 99+ radiator for $110 CDN or $80 US......Hm...........!

So overall, a good day!

Well, I couldn't procrastinate any longer. I had to remove the engine fan assembly on the 'R'. I could see that there was some sort of damage to the frame where the fan assembly fits. In advance I pulled a replacement from a 98 turbo with the fan included.

Anyone who has tackled a radiator or ETM on the 99- turbo P80's know what a swine of a job as you have to disconnect a huge amount to remove the fan assembly. The worst part is the plastic intake pipe to the ETM from the intercooler which is shaped to just be a pain and not quite move enough to allow the fan to move. The ETM intake pipe has a large band clamp which is totally hidden from sight and with large hands near impossible to access to loosen. Anyway fought it all and pulled the fan assembly to find the damage. First thing that became obvious is the fan surround is similar on a 98 but not the same. The differences are all in the upper right hand side of the surround where there is a plastic 'nose' onto which the cables mount with a plastic clip. So my replacement surround was no use. Oh, well. Then looking closer I realised the damage was not to the surround at all! It was actually the plastic frame around the fan that is damaged. Someone has attempted to glue it back together and use black duct tape to mask the problem. Can't believe I missed this when I had to replace the radiator!

The good news, I have the PnP/junkyard fan motor which is the same. The quandary is I know the fan works fine on the original but is the replacement good? Time to dig the plastic welder out and see if I can repair the original. Took a while but it seems to be good now. I ran out of time today so will leave the final decision until tomorrow once the weld has cooled to make sure it has not gone brittle. Hopefully then not a lot of cursing trying to get the ETM intake pipe back on and tightened.

Then onto the 2 rear door lock assemblies to remove the overload resistors so they work in warm weather. Then finally onto the dash removal and repairs. Maybe it will be ready for the summer?!?
