Does my engine sound normal.

Post by 02V70 »

Here is a short video that shows how my engine sounds. (it is in a 2002 V70, and it runs on Gasoline)
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jh3Y0oFqZBTwViRw1vFL-SdZTPHwWiU5/view?usp=sharing
It sounds a bit too tappety compared to other engines. It gets faster and quieter when I rev the engine.

Is this normal? If not, does it indicate any problems?

I also just reassembled everything after replacing the head gasket.

I can't recall if the 02 P2 engines have hydraulic or solid lifters. If they are hydraulic then they may have drained and not re-filled.

What oil are you using in terms of viscosity? 5W-30 or what?

Neil.

I am pretty sure it has solid lifters, and it has new 5w-30 in it.

Sounds like a pulley. When was the last timing belt change? If not the timing then you may be a bit more lucky with the accessories. This is just my guess.

The last timing belt change was 65k miles ago. However, I did take it off and put it back on when I was changing the head gasket.

I listened to it again, and it sounds like its coming from under the cam cover, or maybe the fuel injectors, so I don't think its a pulley.

Ticking noise is ok for these engines. Tappets are loud, injectors are loud, too. Hard to say if the noise is too much, but I don't hear anything immediately abnormal.

Looking at your fresh topics, you need DiCE+VIDA to really take care of this car.

Sounds fine to me on a crappy cell phone speaker pressed into my ear. Only in the presence of the running engine can one truly shoot from the hip at an audible diagnosis.

In decent health, they tend to make a lot of “sewing machine” -type sounds, which come mainly from what VTL mentioned. Yours sounds a lot like it likes running. That can be a chore on a 2.4T!

Put the handle of a long screwdriver against you ear to zero in on the sound.

Or open the oil fill cap and pour in Some motor oil. If if goes quiet it's the valve train.

Yours sounds similar to mine.

Sounds pretty normal, that whirling noise is your serp belt. remove it to check its not the timing belt.
