P2 sunroof stuck open; how to manually close it

Post by - Pete - »

Hello all,

Naturally, this will happen just before forecasted precipitation. If you don’t have time to fix it properly (which most often is to replace/repair the siren/alarm module), or simply don’t care if the sunroof is operational & just need it closed, here is how to do it manually.

Remove plastic beauty cover from map lights. Start at the rearmost corners, it pops off pretty easily.

Remove the 2x 10mm screws here.

Disconnect negative terminal from battery. Wiggle the black plastic away from the ceiling. There are 4 retainers near the corners & 2 green electrical connectors on the left side. Let it dangle.

Next you’ll see the cover for the gear case. It is riveted on. Fear not! Drill rivets just enough to allow the cover to be removed. Take a sip of coffee and realize you should have draped an old sheet or tarp over the whole front seat area.

Remove cover to reveal worm & spur gears.

If sunroof is stuck open in vented position, spin spur gear counterclockwise. If sunroof is stuck fully or partially open, spin spur gear clockwise.
Snap the cover back on & reward yourself with a fresh cup of coffee that doesn’t have shavings in it :D

A large contractor garbage bag and packing tape is in the tool kit if every car in our fleet

1 something to lie on in wet weather

2 gathering up body parts from toxic dates

3 wrapping up road Volvo parts to carry home

4 taping stuck windows and sunroofs .put anX of packing tape over the roof to stop wind from tearing it away

5 picking up unburnt beer cans and melted bottles filled up with gasoline the night before and used to dry up a wet fire wood until it can sustain fire on its own

6 making up a ghetto rain suite, so you could attempt a repair of your Volvo broken in the woods

7 making up a ghetto wind breaker, in regards to activities similar to #6

Somebody had some fun, followed by the having of a little less fun. :(
What’d you come up against VTL?

Those cross bars look nice, what are they?

Edit, I like the window vent shades, I’ve been after a set that doesn’t pooch out. Those look very ideal.

I learned I can transplant a donor body in 3 months, working in second shift, during hobby hours ;)

A boulder.

Thule Aeroblade. They don't take any serious load and flex/wobble a lot. When my roof basket got two expanders, I had no choice but use Volvo steel bars. Four of them.

These are Weathertech in-channel rain guards. Highly recommend. They are a bit tight fit, but I managed to keep them even when swapped door glass with laminated ones (~1.5 thicker).

Ahh, the fancy “Thor’s Hammer” windows. That’s good to know they fit, my V70R has the “Thor’s Hammer” glass option. Even “auto-up” works without sensing “a pinch”?

Sorry to hear about the (assumed) total loss. Did the side curtain airbags deploy? I’m sure the damage is much more evident in person; the doors, mirror & front fender wouldn’t prevent me from buying it back from insurance. But that wrinkled up portion just in front of the rear wheel is worrisome.

Edit: your insurance agent must love you :D

It wasn't a total loss. I got a similar car with the chassis serial number +157 to mine and had everything transplanted from crashed car into a "new" one. Well, actually picking the best undamaged parts from both cars. Still have those extra bonnet, front wings, front seat, driveshaft, engine, transmission, CEM, BCM, ECM, TCM, DEM, UEM, etc, etc laying in garage and in basement.

All passenger side airbags deployed.

The insurance company wasn't aware of situation. We were able to hammer out the jammed wheel and make it back from northern Maine to Boston. Overall, it cost me $2200 for the donor and $300ish for a new Volvo radiator (my was bent, with broken plastic, and the donor came with the Nissens) and misc parts.

I’m pretty sure it is as Abscate says it is, if memory serves me right. Although I don’t recall my needle nose pliers having blue plasti-dipped handles. :D
