…and removed the steering rack, installed lines loosely on bench, and managed to reinstall rack amd lines successfully. All in, I probably had 12 hours on that rack and line reinstall. Next time, it will be 2 hours

In 1999 , the return line nut is a soft alloy and you can strip the threads and head by just looking at it

Three cheers for wizechatmgr who came over for moral support for four hours today. He was the one who figured out that you need both lines loose to get them started due to interference. He also had good guidance on getting the engine mounts back as he got the subframe up.

Yesterday I washed dirty rain off my V70 and other cars. Not April Fools - dirty rain is a real thing in the southwest when dirt in the air falls with rain and things get dirtier than before the rain.

Took me much less clock time to remove the Advance Auto rebuilt rack under the '99NA and do another round trip on both subframes.
'98 Blue Parts Bin rack bolted up fine, and I managed to fabricate some brackets to hold the lines - which as you point out are routed differently than the donor car.

It still has a white Volvo part label on it, the rest of the shaft is perfect. The previous owners just didn't fix the boot when it failed.

My 1999 return line was so seized it wouldn’t come off on the bench with an impact. It went back with the core.

I may well quote this job out with new lines and cut them off at first sign of seizing. Now that I know the rack can be removed with lines attached , though, I fear nothing once it’s on the bench

Replaced the front struts today. Also managed to install the little nylon belt tensioner spacer.

Tomorrow: Heater core replacement, and rear shocks.

cleaned my windshield with some vinegar and a bit of windex. When i tested it my passenger wiper blade came loose and then fell off. The metal started to contact it and i thought i turned off the wipers as it was running based on blasting washer fluid. Went over and pulled up the arm and the intermittent activated and thwacked against the windshield. Had a bit of a dance where i held up the arm and moved with it. Put it down on the glass, ran to the car and turned it off to stop the ordeal.

DOH DOH DOH. Thats what i get for not changing out my passenger and drivers blade at the same time. I left the old rain-x in which does not have a locking clip and swapped my drivers one for a bosch that has a clip. I am left with a faint scratch and a tiny chip where the blade thwacked the glass. No long cracks or chips so thats a plus.

Went in and checked the aftermarket radio connections as there was a lot of crackling. When i undid the electrical tape i realized the guy had litterally tied knots using the copper wire to keep them together. Put some solder in and i dont hear the chirps or crackling now. So take a win with a DOH-nut.
