Relay location for coolant fan motor

Post by Tlbrn »

Hello, thanks for the add. Just bought a 2007 xc70 for my son. Fan motor turns on as soon as the car turns on. Runs constantly while car is on. High winding noise. Trying to figure out where the relay is for this fan - thinking that’s the culprit. !! Thanks.

The “relay” per se is the Controller that is integral to the fan assembly. There is a large gauge wire that powers the fan and a small gauge purple wire that runs from the ECU and provides the triggering signal when either the AC or engine coolant temp calls for it. There is a single coolant temp sensor that provides temp info to trigger the fan AND it provides info to the temp gauge. So if the gauge is showing a reasonable temp level then it’s likely the sensor is OK.
