Driving from Cleveland to Vancouver, BC Canada in July

Post by Eddystone »

We have tentative plans to drive from Cleveland, OH to Vancouver, BC Canada in July. I'm not sure which of my Volvos will make the trip. Probably the 99 S70 T5 or the 940 Turbo wagon (maybe...). That old wagon seems to be indestructible and has given me so much that I could just walk away from it if it had a terminal failure. Most likely the T5 will make the trip. My V70 is non-turbo and doesn't like mountains.

So, this will be an ongoing project, most likely prepping the T5 for the trip. last work on it was a brand new radiator and rear shocks. I will be doing all the timing components and water pump. Possibly rebuilding axles. Car runs just fine at the moment. I have struts for it, as well.

I left Robert a note and hope to get some advice on long trips in a P80.

It would be fun for you to go up into Canada and then across. You wind through the mountains, come down a pass into Hope BC, and then down the river into Vancouver. Or drive through Montana and Glacier Park on your way NW into Canada.

On a long 850 trip, my oil cap gasket failed and dumped oil all over the exhaust and turbo, making a large cloud of smoke. So change that before you go.

The ND bit is going to be the boring part.

On the way out, we need to go through Drumheller to climb up into the world's largest dinosaur and go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum. And, of course, we need to go through Saskatchewan to visit the town where Corner Gas was filmed and then spit in Wullerton (spit). Then on to Calgary where someone we all know at MVS has offered free room and board for a night. Then off to search for the Burglar of Banff (ff,ff) and on to Vancouver.

That's the tentative plan, so far. The route back is wide open.

Hadn't thought about driving right up the spine of the Rockies. I really have no idea what sorts of grades we will encounter on various routes.

Beginning to plan what spares to take with me without carrying an entire second car and half the contents of my garage. I am going to snag some parts at a Pick & Pull including a fuel pump. I've changed one of those in a convenience store parking lot in Massachusetts.

I did this. I didn't touch any of it.

The Burglar of BanF-F

(Banff is a cool place to visit, and the snowfields of Jasper NP!)

Don’t sweat the big trip. That’s about 2400 miles so 49-50 hours of driving. Get either car to Stage zero, refresh fluids and consumable parts, then hit the road. I would want a wagon for that kind of trip.

Changed my mind. I would take the dreamy 1999 p80 seat

I’ve got a big box of 99 spare I can send you for the trip , you can return later

Spare MAF, ETM, COIL, PLUGS.

Everything else can wait. Thst box will keep the Devil in his parlor, looking for Teslas to burn
