upper torque rod bushng play

I have side to side movement in the upper poly/yellow engine mount.
I tightened the bolt throughthe bushing, but of course that just keeps the two pieces together.
It seems I need to tighten the diameter of the mount for the bushing - if that is possible.

What brand of bushing do you have. Can you post a picture?

Sounds like he has the same mount I have, with the same issue. Mine had a Volvo sticker w/ a bar code on it.

The original part is tight in the upper torque rod and the bolt rod is bonded to the rubber to reduce sideways movement.

You could try cutting the rod down so there is less overhang and it keeps the poly bush sections snug.

If you are getting a lot of sideways movement I would check the condition of the lower engine pad by the crank pulley for failure/separation between the rubber and metal portion.

I can't see an indication of the brand.
I checked the mount on the ps and it looks good.
Should I have side to side movement in the yellow bushing?

I would say no, but then I don't use the top poly bushes as I find they make more vibration through the car for little in any way improvement in the way the car behaves. Could just be a poor quality product?

When you say the crank pulley mount 'looks fine'. have you tried putting a floor jack with a piece of wood on it under the oil pan near it and gently lifting to see if the rubber has separated from the metal?

Scott, I have not but I will do that to further check the crank pulley mount.
Are you suggesting the OEM rubber bushing?

You did have me scratching my brain cell on those. Couldn't figure out where they fitted on a Volvo!

I would have expected the 2 slightly raised lips wither side of the torque rod to be snug against the sides with no gap.

There are a couple of things you can do:

1) Replace with an OE style rubber mount. When fitting those there is what looks like a rib running across the diameter. I was told to have that rib leaning forward maybe 10 degrees when fitting by Volvo mechanics as it reduces stress on the bushing.
2) Remove the 2 poly bushes and try sanding them down to make them narrower and allow the raised lips to sit closer to the torque rod. It may also need the metal rod cut shorter too to allow for this.
