Smart. That spring is a little rocket!

Is the spring not part of the replacement unit? I thought they came with them.

Volvo ones do.
It seems that aftermarket ones doesn't.

My 96 850 has been sitting for some months and today I noticed the driver's turn signal light assembly dangling by the electrical wire. When I examined it closer I noticed the plastic part on the body of the light, where the spring attaches, was broken. I'm assuming the plastic was just brittle and the spring tension caused it to break. Online advertised cost of the part for genuine Volvo, #6817769, is somewhere between $64.00 and $120. eEuroparts has theirs for $28.64 each.

I thought about ordering one from a dismantler, but the problem with weathered plastic is you're getting something that would most likely be a short term fix. If the eEuroparts assemblies are a decent replacement, I think I would order and replace both sides.

I'd like to know how different the genuine part is from the oem part. Is there a difference in fitment, illumination, installation?

Genuine (oe) have Hella in the upper part and Volvo in the lower part.
Oem ones have just Hella or Valeo(same quality as oe just without Volvo lettering).

Some aftermarket ones comes without attaching spring,as our member pointed out.

Depo is good aftermarket replacement...don't know about other aftermarket brands...but if you stick with good known aftermarket brands it will be fine.
