NW Montana on the Canadian border. A genuinely spectacular place.

That is glacial melt run-off in all the streams. The minerals melting out of the ice give it the turquoise color. The micro-grit carves shapes in all this hard rock.

Not my pics -

Looking east-ish towards Logan Pass, the top of the "Going to the Sun Highway." Many years the pass has 80 foot deep drifts they have to carve through in the spring to open the highway.

A glacial basin in the rocks at the top of a mountain. These pools are everywhere (for about 2 1/2 months!) When you get up there, you have no sense of scale, no trees, nothing to tell you how far away things are..

I can't resist.... If you climb up the beautiful cirque above the historic Sperry Chalet up in the rocks, you eventually come to the curved cliff wall at the top. It has a deep snowbank against it, but the sun on the rock has melted a narrow walking path up against it, behind the snow. Slide along that and you come to this notch in the wall, with a man-made stone stairway. It's very steep, with a cable handrail attached. Looks like this -

It feels like straight up! We started up, and a group of mountain goats decided they were coming down! It's their park, they have right-of-way no matter what. So we carefully backed down, stepped aside, let them pass. So great.

When you pop out up on top, it's a vast flat-ish plateau of solid rock and icefields. Otherworldly. No scale at all. You think, Oh, let's hike across the ice to that rock island. Turns out it's 5 miles away, and you are crossing melt streams below the ice, it's a little unnerving. One of the coolest places I've ever been. Eventually the snowfield turns into the base of the Sperry Glacier itself, but they advise not to go out on that ice - there are snow-covered fissures and crevasses. Blue ice!

See the lines and grooves in the rock? That's where the ice long ago dragged rubble across.

uh oh, here he goes....

I love this park. (these I did take)

An area of temperate rain forest here along Avalanche Creek. Giant snow load, lowish elevation, mossy, big cedar trees.

I lucked out learning to use the panorama feature on an iPhone. This is Hidden Lake near the pass, and I think Bear Hat Mountain in the center. The tiny white peaks in the distance on the left are where Sperry Glacier is. The lake on the far right drops off a cliff, down the drainage, off another cliff, then another, and lands in Avalanche Lake, which then falls down those red rocks in Avalanche Creek from the pics above.

You make Scotland look beautiful. If I liked to fly, which I don't, I'd go there for vacation some day. I don't like boats either. If I could drive there I'd definitely go. I wonder how long it would take to drive a VW Schwimmwagen there from the US.

You might try a visit to New England. After our visit to Scotland, the trip to New England reminded me of Scotland. Closer and you can drive there.
