OBDii diagnostics on laptop

Post by asummers »

Has anyone used any of the cables and programs that are available for your laptop to be able to read diagnostics on a laptop computer?

Yup. Is there a specific question you had?

Would you recommend the one you have used to someone else? If so, what brand is it and where did you find it? I have seen some online with the cable and software, but aren't sure if they are worth buying or not.

Anything based on the ELM chips should be fine. I've got one from OBD2AllInOne.com that works great.

Check Scantool.net as well. CHECK to make sure your computer/laptop has a serial port, else make sure you order the USB model.

There's a fair bit of software floating around, I usually just use the free Scantool.net software for reading codes.

People are having very good luck with the VOL-FCR Software. Do a google and you'll find plenty. Mine is on its way so I can post more once I have a chance to try it. Btw, this is suppose to reset the service light on the '96-'98 FWD Volvo's as well as query the SRS and ECC modules and reset their fault codes- something not possible up until now without Volvo's specific and expensive scan instruments.

Looks like it's around $200 US.

http://kontakt.s-tech.pl/index.php?go=s ... setlang=en has a few screenshots. Code software either works or it doesn't, and none of it is pretty. :)

I did.
Does its show/clear P codes ie for SRS system?
Yes - I messed up and didn't hook the airbag on the steering wheel back up - it cleared the code fine and didn't come back.
Does it clear service light?
Yes - that is one of the main page buttons on the menu. I just wish it had a function where it would send 1200 Volts to the lamp to terminate it forever.

How is it?
It doesn't read engine codes but it is a great companion to a generic OBD-II scanner.
Is it worth buying?
I would say yes but I have three 850's in the driveway at the moment.
