04 v70 front vibration rumble accelerating left turn only [bad right motor mount]

Post by 22volvo »

260K miles on the 2004 2.5T v70.

I researched on this site before asking a question.

From a stop or already rolling, any acceleration with any left steerage results in a rumble heard and felt (research says right wheel hub).
Driving straight under acceleration or steering right under acceleration, the rumble is not heard or felt.

At any speed w/o acceleration (coasting) steering left or right or coasting straight is quiet. So the question before I shotgun w/ a right wheel hub is: wouldn't a bad right wheel hub make the same noise on turning left (loaded) even w/o accelerating ?

Thanks in advance.

So I'm going to start w/ the lower engine mount due to this thread:

That would be my guess - it's a lateral loading issue, not an acceleration issue.

That would point me more to a bad CV joint than an axle hub, if it only happens on acceleration.

As abscate says a bad axle hub or axle bearing would give a rumble on turning under all conditions with any speed and only when turning in the the outer wheel on the turn which gets loaded the most (in this case the RHF wheel bearing or RHR). But as this happens only when accelerating to the left it would eliminate the RHR. But in all cases you would hear the issue when turning left if the RHF axle bearing was going bad.

I would look at the RHF axle CV joint but I would also remove the RHF wheel and with the car supported try to raise the engine with a floor jack on the passenger side with a piece of wood between the jack and the oil pan. Raise the engine carefully and look for separation in the metal and rubber of the engine pad under the crank pulley.

Good Luck!

Did all three lower engine mounts. The one on the right side under the crank pully was definitely bad. The two hydraulic were still good at 259K miles. Test drive revealed the initial problem resolved (front mount near crank pully).

I appreciate the feedback above.

During the test drive got "transmission service required" P0768 "Shift solenoid D elect" so I opened a new thread on that one.

Working on this car brings to mind the term whack a mole.

When the RIGHT engine mount (FRONT of engine) fails, the right side of the engine sags down.
The RIGHT axle INNER CV joint now works harder bc it is under more acute angle than designed.
When one makes a LEFT turn, there is more weight shifting down on the right side, creating even more of an acute angle...
