Here is a diagram showing the location of the roll over valve on the vent line running to the charcoal cannister in the fender area and from there to the purge valve near the radiator.

Darn, this looks a lot more complicated than I thought with many more possible places for leaks. Yikes!

I do never-the-less appreciate the diagram as it makes it much clearer how this works. One that may not be fun is a pipe to the fuel pump.

Well now I don't feel so bad about this issue. Apparently the car came with this problem at 44,000km and 8 years ago! Car now has close to 160,000 km. One of the 2 local Volvo specialists tried to fix the issue twice and there is an extensive list of test which I am waiting to see the receipt for.

I am now thinking I will give the rear a quick visual and see if I can talk one of the dealers to do a smoke test with one of their apprentices so they can learn and keep the cost down. I will still do any fixing if they find anything.

Neil,

This is on my 98 V70 with the same evap setup.

If you haven't checked it yet, there is a little 3" long hose back near the tank BEHIND the fuel filter that goes bad. Early on in my Volvo life I replaced that and later developed an error again. I assumed that was good and chased all over only to find that the Uro part I used had split within six months.

Everything goes through this hose, and I think it is the return to the tank for the vapors. Not sure about that.

It's an oddball hose with a different diameter on each end, but you could probably fudge it with some standard size in between the two.

Owner previously swapped the fuel cap to try to fix the issue. I still have to check this as I did have a problem with another P80 and it was not actually the cap but the top edge of the fuel filler neck that had been dinged badly preventing a good seal.

I have checked and swapped the emissions valve under the hood with a good used one as well as the hoses to the carbon filter and the other end of the valve to the intake.

Also checked the exhaust valve under the LH inner fender and also tested good.

Only thing left to check is the pipe that runs from the carbon filter to the back of the car.

Q) On FWD cars where does this pipe go to? Also is there a roll-over valve on these cars? If so where is it?

Any other suggestions for possible leaks?

Thanks,

Neil.

Robert Spinner has dealt with this hose before, but I don't recall if he found a workaround. I (dimly) recall something about a Dodge truck hose...

Thanks again guys, I will take a look at that when I can get under the car this weekend I hope. That is after I swap the winter to summer tires, check all the suspension and brake system, fix the broken LHF inner door handle, check if the plugs and ignition parts need swapped yet and go through all the receipts for the last 8 years that were kept to try to get the car on a planned maintenance schedule with as close to a stage 0 as possible.

The fact this issue has been going on for at least 8 years, and an independent repair shop looked it over it is possible.

I had a Volvo OE 'U' hose from the carbon filter to the roll over valve split in about 5 years and 3000 miles!! Was not impressed. If it had been a URO part I would have been impressed it lasted that long!

The AWD P80's have several 'strange' pipes with different diameters, most of which are NLA!

Agreed... it was one of the reasons I picked a silicone hose (a platinum cured silicone hose)... it was able to stretch and fit tightly enough on both ends even though they were different diameters. It has been working OK with no issues noted.

Good news. Is the OE part NLA? Can't recall if it was mentioned?
