2014 XC60 - Engine Replacement (?) - where to start

Greetings!

I have a 2014 XC60 with the B6324S5 engine. My son didn't realize he was in manual mode, red-lined it merging into traffic, and smoked the engine. Now she rattles like hell and barely runs (but she will start). I'm sure that there is significant internal damage - I just don't know the extent

Volvo dealer quoted $14k for an engine replacement "no thanks!"

I hate to throw away a nice used car (and the $10k I paid for it) so I guess that it's time to dive in!

So... questions...
- Should I tear the engine apart and figure out and attempt to repair?
- Or buy a used engine and replace? (seeing them for ~$1500 with 50k-80k miles)
- Where can I get a reliable shop manual? (I found a couple sources online, but do not want to pay now and find out they are worthless)

How are your mechanic skills? Sounds like new used engine is the way to go. IMHO.

Definitely used engine, then you can take the old one apart and see if it’s fixable

Mechanics skills are good... and I've got all of my dad's tools (he was a life-long mechanic). He discouraged me from doing car mechanic work - but I can do pretty much anything mechanically.

This isn't your exact vehicle but given Volvos commonality over the years may be worth a Saturday night watch with popcorn.

My wife may have done this on a new vehicle once with less than 1000 miles on it. It may have ran 25,000+ miles without incident. I may have asked her how you don't notice a car running an extended period at red line. Hypothetical of course.

I'm surprised current ECUs don't have failsafes to derate the engine to prevent damage in these cases.

Holy crap! No way! I can't believe that it lived that long!

And yeah - I'm kinda surprised too. You'd think that it wouldn't allow self-destruction.

OK - purchased a used engine online... should arrive within the next couple days.

I'd really like to have a Shop Manual for the times when I get stuck... Should I buy VIDA or look at one of the other sources of manuals?
