Added oil and shakedown drives proved a success of the oil pan reseal on the 02.

Decided to overachieve and flush the brownish red Steering Fluid with fresh Valvoline Maxlife ATF. Sucked the reservoir with a syringe and pulled the return to dump in a pan with refills of fresh stuff in between a couple quick startups. I think three starts was enough to get clear fluid. Steering is a bit smoother lol.
Reservoir should be replaced at some point as it is weeping at the seam, not OEM Volvo so will spring for good stuff on that one.

I tried over three different evenings last week to replace that booster seal and just could not do it. I walked away several times coming up with a new idea or two, crafted special tools to help push it in. It was a no go. I ended up with a sore back and more scratches on my hands and arms that I can count. I did get the old seal back in, but it leaked more than when I started. I’ve pulled off some good stunts replacing my PS rack pinion cap/gear, PS lines, etc, but this one kicked my butt. Oh well…
Haven't heard a single success story of someone replacing that seal in-place. Hope the day never comes I have to tackle that job

Replaced my brake booster and bled my brakes. The job isn’t too bad. Well, compared to trying to replace that booster seal on the old one in the car, this job was a breeze. Lol

I picked up an 05 XC70 Cross Country yesterday. I couldn’t resist it. It’s a 2 owner w/ 185k and really clean. Unlike my S60 when I got it, this one has no leaks, no clogged PCV. Last timing svc at 122k. The engine runs great and the transmission shifts smooth. I scanned the codes before I bought it and it showed a bunch of nit picky ones like possibly a battery issue. I hooked it up to Vida at home to turn off the DRL feature and while I was figuring out how to do that again, I killed the battery. It went down to 8.6v. I got my neighbor to jump me and let it charge for a while. It charged at ~13.5v and started later. I cleared all the codes and I’ll see what comes back today and of course if it starts 😬. If not, project one get a battery. Lol

Well, not today, but within the last three weeks:

broke the left front strut - pothole - got both struts replaced and 4-wheel alignment. Cost $1700 ($1440 for the parts and repairs, $220 for the rental car, $30 for taxi/Uber between rental agency and repairer).

My repairer spent >4 hours working the phone trying to find struts. Portland (ME) Volvo had them but wanted $1800 the pair. Some guy in Vermont wanted $600 each plus another $100 each for shipping, and it would have taken another week to get them from Vermont to Maine.

My repairer on this project was an auto-body guy I know pretty well - have gone to him in the past and he's done good work. I went to him rather than a mechanic because it seemed like I might have knocked a spray shield or something out of line on the pothole hit. Couldn't see anything else wrong. Even with the broken strut it tracked straight and true, no pulling or wobble, with only a clunk when I went over a bump, manhole or pavement crack. Occasional clunk when backing and turning. I broke it on a Wednesday afternoon commute home and couldn't get an appointment until Monday night for Tuesday. So I kept commuting - 35 mi each way @70 mph.

I have stopped buying lottery tickets - figure I've used up my luck. I'm keeping a broken piece of the coil spring for a paperweight.

I've had this car since December 2019. Since then I've had this and last year, had to replace the engine when the timing belt jumped. And the starter. And it could use an A/C compressor - which is disconnected. I've got more in repairs in it than I paid for it, and it came with only 100k mi on the clock.
1996 850 Turbo Gold Edition, 7 years' reliable service and >220k mi, sadly now gone
2009 S60 2.5T, sent away after taking me down Via Dolorosa. Happy to be rid of it.

We took a day jaunt up to Glacier Park (3 hours) to swap cars with our daughter in law and take a hike. Gorgeous velvety green mountains now - beautiful drive. We got Betty the Volvo back and headed home. (We missed her for 2 weeks compared to an Outback). At a dinner snack stop a warning popped up I’ve never seen - ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED. That seemed a bit serious but everything was in order, engine compartment good.

Last night I found this bit - it’s just a service interval warning (then why not say that?)

I tried the key / button reset and it worked! Crisis averted.

engine runs hot when idling, cooling fan not working.
bought a new $500 fan, still doesn't run.
Traced to a corroded signal wire at the fan harness plug.
slight bulge in the wire, cut it open to find green goblins ate the copper wire.
Soldered in a patch and it works.

demonstrated fan actuation using vida to the wife, she thinks I'm a tech genius.
need to install 2 new front tires, next week maybe.

Well, the XC started fine yesterday, no codes in Vida. I left it on a trickle charge until this morning and the charge cycle finished. I jacked it up today to take a closer look at everything. The control arms are dated 2017 & 2019 and look good. The front struts are quick struts, not quality. The front suspension is a little bouncy. Rear shocks replaced a few years ago by a receipt I found w/ new tires at 165k. I do have a couple leaks. I’ll look closer but I bet its a timing side exhaust cam seal. I’ve got some fluid on the angle gear by the passenger drive shaft input as well. Could be that seal or some blow by from the oil leak. Neither are big leaks. No leaks on angle gear near the transmission and no evidence of leaks from the Haldex unit. Overall, it looks like a well cared for car.
