Need Help With Drive Cycle(s)

Which ones have set? Do you have a code reader ?

Hi Steve,

So far the ones that are ready are:
Misfire monitor
Fuel System monitor
Comp Component (not sure what 'comp' means here)

the ones tha are 'Inc' which means not ready are:
Catalyst monitor
Evap System monitor
Secondary Air System
Oxygen Sensor monitor
Oxygen Sensor Htr (i guess 'Htr' is heater)
EGR/VVT Sys monitor (dont know what this is)

Just to note, the 'Evap System monitor' had NEVER become ready in the 7 years i had the car, but now it should eventually because presumably it was fixed.
The others went ready but i dont remember how long it took or what i did as to the driving regimen.
After a repair one time the two Oxy's when not ready, and i drove the car back and forth to the store maybe twice a week, and htey seemed to never go ready, then all of a sudden one day they both went ready.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I am not familiar with some of those abbreviations.

By SAS do you mean Steering Angle Sensor?

Why do you say i "dont have VVT or EGR" what are they?

Yes Evap take a long time to flip i think, but i believe the leaks were detected and fixed and besides that one even with a leak never bothered me for inspection because i am allowed 2 not ready monitors and it takes so long for that test to complete that i am well through inspection before it tiggers the trouble light. So not too worried about that one.

I'll look up VVT and EGR see what i can find, but sure why you would say i dont have them it does show up on the OBD2 scanner. Maybe you could elaborated a little.

And EGR is exhaust gas recirculation??
Am i right on this?
One of the lines on the scanner displays like this:
"VVT/EGR sys mon inc"
and it goes to:
"VVT/EGR sys mon ok"
after it becomes ready.
In the past the only one that stayed 'inc' (not ready" was the Evap.
But not sure why you would say i dont have them. The monitor for that set is "inc" which means not ready.

No SAS is not steering angle sensor. Is is a supplementary/secondary air system which is an air pump the engines use when cold to increase the amount of air to the cat to reduce the emissions for the tailpipe when the engine is running richer.

If the car has the system, there should be a valve on the exhaust manifold with a pipe running down to a rotary pump mounted under the battery tray. The problem with the system is the valves fail, and then condensation runs down into the pump which has no drain and fills the pump with water preventing it running and rusting it solid.

If it has failed fairly recently, removing the pump and drilling a small 1/8" hole at the lowest point can help it to drain, but likely it is bad. If it is full of water then a new valve is required and possibly a pump to get the system to work as it should again. There is a well documented set of instructions and the SAS system delete but this is not allowed in some areas. Abscate may know for your area.

VVT is Variably Valve Timing. This was not fitted until the non-distributor car post 1999.

Very early cars had EGR, not on Al’s 1998

Picture of the “UFO” which is a SAS component attached….about half of 1998 were so fitted.

If your scanner is reporting EGR isn’t ready it’s not mapped correctly to the ECU codes. Cars without EGR don’t have an EGR monitor. Make sure you aren’t mixing up INC with N/A

The car manufacturers are supposed to setup the monitors so that they will clear if you drive the standard fuel economy measurement loop.

The drive cycle is done with very moderate acceleration and small throttle openings and several sections where the vehicle slows down (without touching the brake) and then slowly accelerates again.

If you can't get the rated MPG then you are driving to aggressively.

For my 2010 S80 I had my son drive it like a Grandma for a day and it set the last monitor.

For my 2009 A4 2.0T I replaced the battery (which resets the monitors) and I drove it for over a year and I didn't get all of the monitors to set.

Here is what I did.

Note: this is from a cold start, I accelorated very slowly to 55 on the freeway, I exited on a ramp that will allow me to get back on and I slowed to 20 MPH then I slowly accelerated to 55. Then I chose an exit with a long ramp and slowed with my foot off the gas and no brake and I came to a rolling stop.

I did all of this without touching the brake

This cycle diagram is what the smog guy made me do. Even after driving the car for about 100+ miles through a combination of street and freeway driving at varying speeds...the monitors never went ready. The smog guy insisted that I follow the diagram. Had to find an industrial area without any stop lights. Then once you complete the cycle, do it 2-3 more times.

Thanks for the info.
I dont really know if it has SAS because it does not show up on the OBD2 scanner.

EGR/VVT does show up on the scanner, but i guess it could be just EGR because they lumped them together for the readout, i dont know for sure.

This is non turbo, so there is no turbo thank God or there would be something else to worry about

Oh oh oh, ha ha, yes now i know what the SAS is and yes i do have that and i replaced it about 6 years or so ago because it was bad and letting water into the now notorious Air Pump.
Ha, i like that name, UFO for that thing it looks like it ha ha.

Here is a pic of part of the scanner readout. This was back in 2016 so EGR was ok then after some time.
If it is not EGR then i have no idea what it is.
If this was not included in the test it would have "n/a" next to it, not "ok" and not "inc".
For this scanner, "inc" means "not ready". So there are three states it can be with this scanner:
"ok", "n/a", and "inc".
There is one that is actually "n/a" so i ignore that one.
The others that read "inc" eventually go to "ok" when they are ready.

Here is a snap shot, but the EGR one is now "inc" and it is not "n/a" and it is not "ok".
You can see that AC line that is "n/a" so i ignore that one.

Hello Paul and thanks for that explanation.

The service guy said that they did a drive cycle test run 2 times with one routine and 2 more times with the routine that Steve posted here and he said neither worked and that the monitors were "close" to flipping to ready. The thing is, i dont believe they had enough time to do that after i gave the routine to him, but its hard to say.
The car was driven 270 miles however, for what that is worth, but no more went ready.
I called the guy at a Volvo dealer nearby and when i told him it was driven 270 miles he chuckled a little and said that it has to be driven for one or two weeks of normal driving to get them to set. So it's like going back and forth to work each day.
But i am 'retired' and cant drive too far right now, until maybe the first or second or third week of July, and that is after the inspection is due so im in a bind right now.
The real kicker is the service guy said he could get the monitors to flip to ready but he changed his mind.
